Romance fraud can happen to anyone — and the impact can be devastating. ⚠️

A recent case in Droitwich shows how offenders build trust online before asking for money. Thanks to officers' work, funds were recovered, but that isn’t always the outcome.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and speak to someone you trust.

A member of our community has been reunited with a significant sum of money after becoming the victim of a romance fraud in which he was led to believe he was in a genuine relationship with a woman he met online.

The victim was persuaded over a period of time that he was communicating with a woman who had a romantic interest in him. Through regular contact and the development of what appeared to be a trusting relationship, the fraudster convinced him to send money under various false pretences.

Following intelligence received, officers launched an investigation which helped identify and trace funds linked to the fraud. Through enquiries and partnership working, officers were able to secure the return of the victim’s money.

Droitwich Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector Lisa Hornberger said: “Romance fraud can have a devastating impact on victims, both financially and emotionally. Criminals are skilled manipulators who spend time building trust and creating a false sense of connection before asking for money. We are pleased that, through investigative work and intelligence gathering, we were able to help recover funds for the victim in this case.

“We would encourage anyone who has met someone online and is being asked for money to stop and think carefully. If something doesn’t feel right, speak to a trusted friend or family member and seek advice before making any payments.”
