The East Suffolk Green, Liberal Democrat and Independent Group presented a motion to East Suffolk Council today that would see the Council supporting local people to better access environmentally friendly home improvements like cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, or condensing boiler upgrades. The motion was prepared by the GLI Group and a team of professors from Warwick University’s Economics department. New research from Warwick University has shown that the average East Suffolk household will see an increase in energy bills of £1160 per year in 2023, even with Government support in the form of the Energy Price Guarantee....

UNISON has announced that more than 96% of East Suffolk Norse staff voted to strike on an 88% turnout over demands for pay equal to other refuse workers across the country. The Green, Liberal Democrat and Independent Group called for higher wages for hardworking council employees today at East Suffolk’s Full Council. Council employees in East Suffolk should get at least the new real living wage of £10.90 an hour announced today, equivalent to £21,000 a year full time, says Cllr David Beavan, leader of the GLI opposition, who are proposed a more equal pay structure for public sector workers....

The GLI Group continue to support concerned local residents, the RSPB, and Friends of the Earth in resisting the Sizewell C build. At East Suffolk’s full council meeting this evening, Green, Liberal Democrat and Independent Councillors called for East Suffolk Council to formally object to Sizewell C. The Green, Lib Dem and Independent Councillors raised concerns over the enormous planned construction on an inadequate road network, a lack of the necessary volume of fresh water, predicted pollution to seawater and damage to wildlife, as well as the financial viability of the French-owned developers EDF....

The East Suffolk GLI Group have today written to all local conservative councillors, calling on them to disown the governments ‘attack on nature’. In an open letter, the GLI Group have described plans to downgrade environmental protections as a ‘three-pronged assault on nature’. Last Friday’s ‘mini-budget’ included plans for ‘investment zones’ which would make it easier to get planning permission. The government has also published plans for a ‘sunset clause’ on environmental protections introduced when the UK was in the EU....

Sirs/Madams, With the Planning Inspectorate decision due this week and despite fruitless ‘battles’ at East Suffolk Council with the Conservative administration, we felt it important to try and put into articulate words our view of the debacle of Sizewell C and possibly to touch on some angles that haven’t already been covered both here and elsewhere. It has felt as though the arguments have being partly framed in terms of nature and wildlife vs jobs – the former seemingly being perceived as a mainly middle class interest which is unfortunate....

Today at East Suffolk Council’s Annual Meeting, Cllr David Beavan took over as Leader of the GLI Group. He replaces Cllr Caroline Topping, who has served as Leader since September 2020. Cllr David Beavan, Liberal Democrat Member for Southwold, received unanimous support from the GLI Group as he moves into the opposition group leader position.
