The political partnership that transformed Senegal has ruptured. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the entire government cabinet. This decision brings a sudden end to months of silent power struggles and policy friction between the two long term allies.
The core of the division lies in economic governance and state sovereignty. Senegal is currently managing an intense fiscal crisis after audits exposed massive hidden debts from the previous administration, driving national public debt to an unprecedented 132 percent of economic output. The two leaders fundamentally clashed on how to move forward:
Sonko strongly opposed any formal restructuring pushed by Western international lenders, arguing that Senegal could meet its debt obligations without succumbing to painful external conditions.
Faye favored a more conventional and flexible approach to negotiate paths forward directly with the International Monetary Fund.
Internal friction peaked over fuel subsidies, as Sonko rejected requests to raise domestic fuel prices despite warnings that costs could exceed the national budget by 2 billion dollars due to global market spikes. This rift highlights the complex structural challenges African leaders face when balancing radical sovereignty with inherited economic crises.

"Senegal will not bend the knee."

Senegal plan to parade the Afcon trophy before their game against Peru in Paris on Saturday, with the head of the country's Football Federation vowing a "crusade" against the decision to strip the team of the title.

🇸🇳📢 OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM THE SENEGAL GOVERNMENT

Following CAF’s decision to award Morocco 🇲🇦 the AFCON 2025 title and strip it from Senegal, the Prime Minister of Senegal issued the following statement: 👇

“🇸🇳 The Government of Senegal expresses its deep dissatisfaction with the decision taken by the Appeals Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which aims to strip the Senegalese national team of the 2025 African title and award it to Morocco 🇲🇦.

⚠️ This unprecedented and extremely serious decision directly contradicts the fundamental principles of sports ethics, foremost among them integrity, loyalty, and respect for the fairness of the game. It stems from a clearly erroneous interpretation of the regulations, resulting in a decision that is gravely unlawful and highly unjust.

⚽ By calling into question a result achieved at the end of a match played regularly until its conclusion and won in accordance with the rules of the game, CAF seriously undermines its own credibility as well as the legitimate trust that the African people place in continental sporting institutions.

❌ Senegal cannot tolerate an administrative decision that erases commitment, merit, and sporting excellence. Senegal firmly rejects this unjustified attempt to seize a legitimate title belonging to Senegal.

🔍 This situation calls for an independent international investigation into allegations of corruption within CAF’s administrative bodies.

⚖️ Furthermore, Senegal will pursue all appropriate legal avenues, including before competent international judicial bodies, to ensure justice is served and to restore the primacy of the sporting result.

🤝 The Government takes this opportunity to reaffirm its solidarity with Senegalese citizens detained in Morocco 🇲🇦 following the events of the AFCON final. It reiterates its full commitment to monitoring this situation to ensure a positive outcome as soon as possible.

🇸🇳 Senegal will remain firm, vigilant, and unwavering in defending the rights of its national team and restoring the honor of African sport.”

"Brothers, I know this hurts deep—the trophy we fought for, bled for, and earned on the pitch has been taken away.

But listen to me: real victory isn't in silver or gold handed over by decisions we can't control as Allah blesses who he choses to bless.

True win lives in the heart, in the fire we showed every minute we wore the shirt of Senegal, in the unity that made us unstoppable.

We aren't losing our pride today; we have proved who we are- People with a strong and resilient spirit! And every African who sees through the lenght of true justice knows the truth. Heads up, keep that same spirit, because the world saw our fight, and that's worth more than any cup.

We rise again—stronger, hungrier, together. The heart of a Lion never breaks. 🇸🇳❤️ Let's keep building."

-Africa's soccer superstar Sadio Mané pens deep, emotional words to his heartbroken teammates
