🍂 Autumn term back with a bump! Tonight we're kicking off with Wokingham Borough Council's Community & Corporate Overview & Scrutiny Committee — a cross-party committee that shapes many of the Council's strategies and work programmes.

On the agenda tonight:
🏡 Affordable & adapted homes - a new investment programme to deliver up to 165 homes
💼 Employment & Skills Strategy - looking beyond strong headlines to support those struggling to get into work, including under-24s, disabled people, and informal carers (mainly women)
🚌 Local Transport Delivery Plan - unlocking £45m for buses, walking, cycling, safer streets and road maintenance

👀 These meetings are open to the public - many Council and Town/Parish meetings are live-streamed too. Check the relevant council website for details.

❓ Got a question about how our 18(!) councils in the borough work, or what's coming up this week? Let us know in the comments!

This week I went to 10 Downing Street to hand in a petition calling for the killers of PC Harper to remain in prison. I also enjoyed spending the bank holiday meeting residents at Swallowfield Show.

Here's what else I have been up to:

Cllr Stephen Conway was on BBC Berkshire this morning talking about how Wokingham Borough Council has stepped in to avoid Age Concern Twyford & District day centre having to shut its doors today.

The support from the council will ensure the centre can keep providing its vital services to the community while an expression of interest process is run to find another business model or opertor to run the service for the long term.

Full segment, including comment from the centre's care manager Debs Heffernan, on BBC sounds - link in comments.

Parliament is heading back to Westminster tomorrow, and after a quieter summer (of meetings at least!) there are also more formal council meetings taking place across the Borough this week.

Just a warm up before things get much busier next week! The public can view meetings and papers - check out the relevant council website for details.

Many people first get involved in politics because of a particular issue. For Imogen Shepherd-DuBey - Councillor for Emmbrook, Wokingham it was campaigning for equal marriage rights for same-sex couples after trying to move back to the UK with her wife who is a US-citizen. Thankfully that battle has been won!

Imogen is now Executive member for Finance and Governance, and represents Embrook Ward.
