It’s Pride Month! 41 years ago Guildford Area Gay Society (GAGS) marched at Pride London on 29 June 1985. GAGS were Surrey’s earliest gay support group and were founded in 1977. They took with them their fabulous home-made banner, which now forms part of their unique archive, held at Surrey History Centre. This month, some of our wonderful volunteers have researched and created a new free foyer display, 'Sirens and Sandbags: Civil Defence in Wartime Surrey', exploring the vital roles played by local people on Surrey's home front during the Second World War.

Discover the story of a Caterham ARP warden awarded the George Medal, a Banstead auxiliary fireman who lost his life after firefighting during the bombing of the London docklands and an Ash ambulance driver and firewatcher who later entertained troops overseas with Entertainments National Service Association.
Featuring newly identified material and volunteer research, the display brings to life the names and contributions of those on Surrey’s home front.

On display during normal opening hours until Thursday 25 June at Surrey History Centre.

There are also a few remaining tickets available for the Surrey World War Two Bomb Map Launch event this Saturday, more details and to book visit: https://orlo.uk/lXfD4

Secret Surrey on BBC Surrey explores the hidden grotto at Painshill Park, Cobham, part of a 40-year project by the Hon Charles Hamilton to develop the grounds in the 18th century https://orlo.uk/QiA1X

When the Reverend William Gilpin visited Painshill in August 1772, he made meticulous sketches of views in the grounds, including the grotto (illustrated here).

We've got two fascinating events coming up this week!

Tomorrow, join Professor Jane Hamlett on Zoom as she explores how the home has become an important lens for understanding the past, drawing on research into domestic life in the 19th century.

Then on Saturday, we're launching the Surrey WW2 Bomb Map. Join Martin Stilwell for an expert talk revealing how bombing and aircraft crashes affected communities across Surrey during the Second World War.

Booking is essential for both events, and spaces for Saturday's 1.30pm talk are limited. https://orlo.uk/PXTUI
