We're celebrating by shining a spotlight on some of the fantastic projects made possible by our local volunteers.

Witney is home to a wonderful range of community gardens, all cared for by the community gardeners who generously give their time to help them flourish. Volunteers have also played an important role in the ongoing development of Witney Lake and Country Park, working alongside local volunteer groups to make a real difference.

Some of the many achievements they've helped bring to life include:

🌳 Planting two community orchards
🌿 Laying hedgerows
🌼 Spreading yellow rattle seed to encourage wildflower growth
🔨 Building fences
🪑 Repairing benches
🌷 Planting bulbs and clearing the wild area at Unterhaching Park
🐦 Supporting bird, reptile and plant surveys
🗑️ Organising litter picks
🌱 Removing invasive plant species
🪵 Creating habitat piles for wildlife
🌾 Clearing brush and overgrown vegetation
👀 Carrying out sightline clearance to improve visibility and safety
🦇 Installing bird and bat boxes

Groups including the Witney Shed, University of the Third Age, and Witney Woodland Volunteers have been invaluable in supporting these projects. As a small thank you for all their efforts, we're always happy to provide refreshments for our hardworking volunteers during their sessions – as you can see in the photos!

If you're interested in getting involved at Witney Lake and Country Park, please contact Biodiversity and Green Spaces Officer Carl at [email protected].
