โšฝ๐ŸŒฑ Ready for the New Football Season! ๐ŸŒฑโšฝ
The Town Council have been working hard on our football pitches across Witney in preparation for the new season!
Following a challenging period of hot and dry weather, our pitches are now turning green again as the grass responds to the recent conditions and the hard work of our teams.
Our direct workforce has been working behind the scenes to prepare the pitches for the season ahead, carrying out essential maintenance and preparation to ensure they are in the best possible condition for players of all ages.
A huge thank you to our grounds maintenance teams for their hard work, skill and commitment in getting the pitches ready.
From everyone at Witney Town Council, we wish all of our local football clubs, players, coaches, volunteers and supporters the very best for the 2026/27 season.
Good luck, play well and enjoy the season!

Merchant Navy Day Flag Raising

This morning, Deputy Mayor Cllr Sandra Simpson was joined by Cllr Rachel Crouch and Steve Reynolds, a former member of the Fleet Air Arm, to raise the Red Ensign in recognition of Merchant Navy Day.

Merchant Navy Day is commemorated each year on 3 September to honour the loss of the SS Athenia, the first British merchant ship to be sunk at the beginning of the Second World War. Travelling from Liverpool to Canada, the passenger ship was torpedoed west of Ireland, carrying 1103 passengers and 315 crew. She later sank, resulting in the loss of 112 lives, 93 passengers and 19 crew.

Since Merchant Navy Day was established in 2000, the occasion also provides an opportunity to recognise the work of seafarers today. The Merchant Navy transports around 95% of the UK's trade, often in challenging and dangerous conditions. Through the flag raising, we remember those who lost their lives at sea and pay tribute to the service of Merchant Navy personnel, past and present.
