Whetmead Nature Reserve, Witham Essex

Whetmead Nature Reserve, Witham Essex Whetmead is an old landfill site which has been returned to the local community, allowing all ages to enjoy an observe wild flora and fauna within Witham.

Whetmead is an open space area, designated as a Local Nature Reserve (LNR). Much of the area is dominated by a rough meadow terrain with some plant species flowering, as well as young woodland, scrub and three lagoons which are all linked. Small creatures can be seen such as butterflies, dragonflies and bees as well as seed-eating birds. Why not walk down and see what you can spot?

Hello, those of you interested in nature and keen to help the local community, I was wondering whether you would be interested in a regular volunteer group. Once formed this group could vote on a president and vice-president who organise meetings, events and volunteer activities. Please post below what you think of this so that I can report back,

Hello Friends,
I am so happy to say that it is now possible to walk all of the original routes on site as they have been cleared from nettles to a reasonable width. Now hopefully begins the design of a trail leaflet, a children's leaflet, new interpretation boards and signposts for the different routes!

Earlier today involved clearing the pathways from overgrown nettles. This will allow you to walk freely around the reserve. I aim to clear all routes to enable easier and freer movement around the site, as well as signals directing routes and more information on the reserve.
