What does it mean to be a good neighbour today?

Heather Thompson, Chair of Cheshire Neighbourhood Watch Association, recently joined Paula White on BBC Radio Stoke to talk about how Neighbourhood Watch has evolved since 1982.

The conversation looked beyond the old stereotypes and focused on what Neighbourhood Watch is really about today: community connection, trust, support and people looking out for one another.

From face-to-face conversations to local WhatsApp groups, the way neighbours connect may have changed, but the heart of being a good neighbour remains the same.

Being considerate.
Being respectful.
Being thoughtful.
And helping people feel safer and more connected where they live.

Safety alert for parents, carers and retailers.

Before buying, please check that products clearly show:

• UKCA or CE markings
• manufacturer details
• UK importer details
• appropriate safety warnings
• clear instructions

Parents and carers should remove toys from use immediately if they leak, split, smell strongly of chemicals, or do not include proper safety labelling.

There is also a dangerous online trend encouraging children to microwave these toys. These products should never be heated. The gel inside can become extremely hot while the outside remains cool, creating a risk of burns if the toy bursts.

Please share this with parents, carers, grandparents and anyone buying toys for children.

Concerns can be reported via the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 0808 223 1133.

That’s when good neighbours become good friends.

Ruth Hampshire from The Courtyard in Willaston is a brilliant example of what Neighbourhood Watch is really about.

During lockdown, Ruth set up a local Neighbourhood Watch scheme and helped support neighbours who were isolated, vulnerable, or struggling.

She helped with:

• weekly shopping
• prescription collections
• hearing aid batteries
• transport for vaccinations
• telephone check-ins
• online banking and scam concerns
• household issues such as Wi-Fi and smoke alarms

Ruth did all this while managing her own health challenges, showing incredible kindness, patience, and commitment to her community.

Her efforts led to her being named Cheshire COVID-19 Community Volunteer of the Year.

Ruth’s story reminds us that Neighbourhood Watch is not just about crime prevention. It’s about community, care, connection, and knowing someone is there when you need them.

Could your street benefit from this kind of neighbourliness?

We know many Coordinators prefer email, and that’s absolutely fine.

If you have a community win, neighbourly moment, event photo or reason why you became a Coordinator, send it to us. We can turn it into a post.

Help us show what Neighbourhood Watch looks like across Cheshire. You don’t need to be on social media to be part of the story.

Sometimes, building a stronger community starts with something as simple as a cup of tea.

A Communi-Tea is a relaxed way to bring neighbours together, start conversations and build local connections.

It could be a few neighbours having a brew, a small street get together, a coffee morning or a picnic style catch up.

When neighbours know each other, they are more likely to look out for one another, and that is what Neighbourhood Watch is all about.

This Neighbourhood Watch Week, we’d love to hear from Coordinators across Cheshire.

Have you hosted a Communi-Tea, street party, coffee morning, community event or simple neighbourly get-together?

Send us a short update, photo or story from your scheme and we can help turn it into a social media post.

You don’t need to be on social media to be part of the story.

Could your street host one?

As we celebrate Neighbourhood Watch Week 2026, we’re shining a light on the people who help make communities across Cheshire safer, stronger and more connected.

This week, we’re also celebrating a proud moment for CNWA.

Our Social Media Volunteer, Leanne Gray, was recently awarded Volunteer of the Year 2026 at the University of Chester Careers and Employability Recognition Awards.

Leanne was recognised for helping modernise how Cheshire Neighbourhood Watch engages with communities, bringing a fresh approach to social media and helping us reach new audiences across the county.

But this award reflects something bigger.

Neighbourhood Watch is powered by volunteers. People who give their time, skills, ideas and energy to support their communities.

Whether that’s running a local scheme, sharing information, organising community events, supporting neighbours or helping behind the scenes, every contribution matters.

This Neighbourhood Watch Week, we’d like to say thank you to all of our volunteers, Coordinators, supporters and members who help make a difference every day.

Could your skills help your community too?

You don’t need years of experience. You just need to care about where you live. 💛

Neighbourhood Watch Week 2026 starts tomorrow. 💛

From 1st–7th June, we’ll be celebrating the people who help make communities across Cheshire safer, stronger and more connected.

Neighbourhood Watch is not just about crime prevention.

It’s about neighbours knowing each other.
It’s about sharing trusted information.
It’s about looking out for vulnerable people.
It’s about community spirit.
And it often starts with one person deciding to do something.

This week, we’ll be sharing stories, recognising volunteers and showing what Neighbourhood Watch looks like today.

Could you help your street, estate or local community feel more connected?
