There have been a number of tragic water-related incidents across the country this week, including one here in Cheshire, and our thoughts are with everyone affected.
Our crews and prevention teams will continue to visit local lakes, rivers and open water sites, to speak to the public about the dangers of being in and around water.
As the warmer weather continues, we want everyone to enjoy Cheshireβs beautiful outdoor spaces but please be aware of the risks that open water can present.
β οΈ Know the risks
Water can be much more dangerous than it looks:
β’ Strong undercurrents can be hidden beneath calm surfaces
β’ Water temperatures can drop suddenly just below the surface
β’ Cold water shock can quickly affect breathing, strength and movement
π¨ If someone is in trouble
Call 999 and ask for Fire and Rescue Service
Give a clear location (what3words can help)
Remember: SHOUT, REACH, THROW - DONβT GO
β’ Shout - encourage them to float on their back
β’ Reach - use something long like a stick or branch
β’ Throw - give them something that floats
β’ Donβt go - never enter the water yourself
βοΈ If you find yourself struggling in water
β’ Float on your back and try to relax
β’ Control your breathing - the shock will pass
β’ Once calm, call for help or swim to safety
If you see our teams out and about, please come and have a chat.
