“Hanging the Brick”

Each year, as part of our Christmas celebrations, we honour our Regiment’s heroic role at the Battle of Waterloo where in securing the gates at Hougoumont Farm and holding that vital ground against the French we set the conditions for victory.

Two Coldstreamers in particular were singled out for praise: Lt Col James Macdonnel who had overall command of the infantry defending Hougoumont and led the vital closing of the gates, with his sergeant, James Graham.

Sources differ on which man Wellington famously described as "the bravest man in the British Army", today the officers’ and sergeants’ messes fight it out over sporting events…

“Study history to avoid it’s pitfalls”

The travelled to Bosnia to conduct a Battlefield Study of the Battalion’s involvement in Operation GRAPPLE 3.

Historical battlefield study provides exposure to the changes and continuities in war and warfare and better prepares us for future operations. As Captain Professor Sir Michael Howard reminds us:

First, study in width. To observe how warfare has developed over a long historical period.

Next, study in depth. Study campaigns, and explore them thoroughly, consulting original sources and applying various theories and interdisciplinary approaches. "This is important," observed Sir Michael Howard because as the "tidy outline dissolves, we catch a glimpse of the confusion and horror of real experience."

And lastly study in context. Wars and warfare must be understood in context of their social, cultural, economic, human, moral, political, and psychological contexts because "the roots of victory and defeat have to be sought far from the battlefield."

No terrain too tough!

The Coldstream Guards team have achieved a Gold Medal in the Brunei Jungle Warfare Skills Meet 2024 (Ex SUNDA PATROL).

The competition involves patrolling 15km through thick, primary jungle with command tasks, observation lanes, contact drills, a close target recce, medical scenarios and a river crossing. All of this takes place over three days and concludes with a comprehensive patrol back brief.

Truly second to none!

Change of command

Today we bid a fond farewell to Lt Col Fred Wells, our Commanding Officer. As tradition dictates, the outgoing Commanding Officer was escorted out of Victoria Barracks, a time-honored custom reflecting respect and camaraderie.

His final PT session was a loaded march around Col. Fred’s alma mater, Eton College.

We wish him every success in his new role at and thank him for his leadership and dedication to the Battalion.
