The Great Hall with Westgate Museum

The Great Hall with Westgate Museum Where history and legend meet šŸ“ Winchester, Hampshire Winchester Castle dates from the reign of William the Conqueror (1066-1087).
(408)

The finest surviving 13th century hall with the greatest symbol of medieval mythology, King Arthur's Round Table. By the end of King John's reign in 1216 the castle and its royal palace needed extensive repair. Between 1222 and 1235 the Castle's hall was rebuilt, financed by Henry III, and the Great Hall remains to this day. Other alterations and improvements brought the castle to its peak of mili

tary and domestic development during the reigns of Henry III (1216-1272) and Edward I (1272-1307). Edward and his second wife Margaret of France, almost lost their lives in a fire which destroyed the royal apartments in 1302. The roof was rebuilt at the end of the 14th century changing the halls external appearance. During the English Civil War the Castle was held by the Royalists until its capture by the Parliamentary Forces in 1646. Oliver Cromwell ordered the demolition of the Castle, but the Great Hall was kept as a venue for assemblies and the County Assizes. The Hall was restored in the 1870s, and was used last as a court between 1938 and 1974.

12th century castle halls were massive and gloomy, with few furnishings. In the 13th century halls became lighter and more comfortably furnished. The Great hall of Winchester was the first and finest of these halls. With its Purbeck stone columns and pointed arches, it had all the best features of Early English Gothic architecture. Plastered and decorated walls emphasised its lightness, elegance and grace. The finest and most brilliant colours were used. The Hall reflected the preferences and tastes of Henry III. He was born at Winchester Castle in 1207 and loved to return here. During his reign (1216-72) art, architecture and design became more refined and sophisticated. This trend was reflected in the Great Hall. The Hall was the heart of the Castle. When in residence the King dined here, discussed affairs of State with his barons and clergy and sat in court to administer justice. Visit us and experience this unique historical site. We have custodians on hand to answer questions and to unlock the Great Hall's rich history. We also have a Long Gallery providing more information and a Gift Shop providing a wide selection of souvenirs.

Thank you to everyone who supported our Big Give campaign.

With your help, we raised over £13,000 through the campaign, unlocking vital match funding to help children and young people find inspiration, creativity and joy in the arts when they need it most. Since the campaign closed, further gifts and Gift Aid have taken the total to over £18,000, which is a wonderful result.

We are also grateful to the donor who provided match funding and believes deeply in this work, helping every pound given to go further. Together, this shared commitment will enhance local children and young people’s connection to their local museum or gallery and access to creative opportunities

12/05/2026

Only 3 days left to have your donation doubled in our match-funding campaign for our Children and Young People's Fund.

The more we raise, the more children and young people we can support, with opportunities and safe spaces to express themselves, explore their feelings and build confidence - like the ceramics workshops shown here.

If you can, please make a donation today, and make double the difference in the lives of children and young people.
Donations must be made before midday on 15th May to be eligible for match-funding.

Please make your donation via the Big Give platform here: https://buff.ly/0CIreUT

A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to our Children and Young People’s Fund during our match funding campaign so far.

Your generosity is directly funding creative programmes across our venues, that provide safe spaces for children to express themselves, explore their emotions and build self-confidence.

Could you help us to help even more children and young people? We’d love to reach our target and have a little way to go!

By donating what you can before midday on 15th May, your contribution will be doubled, thanks to a very generous supporter of our work.

For more information about the work of our Children and Young People’s Fund and to make your donation, head to the Big Give platform here: https://buff.ly/0CIreUT
Thank you
