At the heart of the waterworks is the Hathorn Davey triple expansion engine running on superheated steam from the 1906 Babcock and Wilcox boiler. This engine could pump water to the reservoir high on the downs in addition to lifting water from the deep wells. As a visitor you can see both the boiler and engine in operation during open days (such as this Sunday and Monday - 3rd and 4th May).
