πŸ… Tiger Tuesday πŸ…

Standing guard at the gates of Serle's House - historic home of the Royal Hampshire Regiment and home of the museum - is this proud tiger.

The house was built around 1730 and is one of the finest buildings in Wi******er. It was bought by the Serle family in 1781 and thanks to the work of Peter Serle - who began soldiering as a hobby but rose to the rank of full Colonel due to his skill and command - Serle's House has a history with the regiment spanning over 200 years.

"I look through my binoculars towards the sea and see thousands of ships of all sorts, and in the air thousands of planes, with black and white stripes on the wings, that were turning, several fighter planes which left big trails of black smoke. There is no longer any doubt, this is the signal of the landing being announced to us."

This is an eyewitness account of the early morning of D-Day, 6th June 1944, from a French citizen, living in Asnelles, France.

Find out more on a visit to the museum. We are open from 10.30 - 3pm on Saturdays or learn more on our website - https://www.royalhampshireregiment.org/about-the-museum/timeline/d-day-1944/

Did you know - June 5th is National Sausage Roll day πŸŽ‰

Pastry-wrapped, seasoned sausages have long been a staple of British cuisine, and have been sold by the NAAFI and produced by military caterers as an important 'taste of home' for soldiers.

In celebration of National Sausage Roll day, enjoy this First World War recipe to prepare 'Sausages for 100 men', beautifully handwritten by L/Cpl Frederick A French, 1st Battalion, in his 1917 cookery course notes.

πŸ… Tiger Tuesday πŸ…

This Tiger can be found in the museum, on the parchment boasting the Freedoms held by the Royal Hampshire Regiment. The Freedom of marching through a city "with with drums beating, Colours flying and bayonets fixed" is a huge honour.

"In peace there's nothing so becomes a man as modest stillness and humility: but when the blast of war blows in our ears, then imitate the actions of a tiger."

These fitting lines from Shakespeare's Henry V are engraved on the Purbeck stone centrepiece of the Regiment's memorial garden. Located in the centre of a vibrant City, the garden is an oasis of calm and reflection.

Visit now to see the roses - planted in beds created to remember the Battle of Minden - in full bloom.
