As I wave my removals off to Brussels it is only right to reflect on the last 16 months as the SPS Branch Sgt Maj (the boss also asked me to).

My first day coincided with the first National lockdown on the 23 March 20. I was rightly sent back to my room to Work From Home. Unfortunately, like many others, that didn’t include the luxury of a MODNet lap top. So I decided to embrace what I did have…Social Media! We have participated in charity runs, fitness challenges, built Juniors’, Seniors’ and WO forums. We held Zoom visits, Zoom quizzes, and Virtual Seminars that had a reach as far as Canada, Belize, Gibraltar and beyond!

The level of talent that we have in the Branch has been even more noticeable, because of COVID! QR codes are being used for RACs, travel bookings and much more day to day business due to the dispersed nature of WFH.

The biggest impression of the Branch during COVID, from the SM perspective is how we, the Branch, look after our own and our communities. I have never seen so much charitable work going on. It is truly heartwarming.

My objectives when I started in this role was to create a SharePoint that would be a one stop shop for our SP to use on a daily basis, please continue to use the “AGC (SPS) Resources and Sites”SharePoint and share it as widely as possible. I also wanted to improve communication within the Branch, this is still work in progress but I think it is better, finally I wanted to visit as many isolated units as I could, sadly that has not happened but I am hopeful that Miss Lowe will be able to when she assumes the role in September.

Seek opportunities and drive your own career, YOU should be the best career manager that you have ever had! Don’t rest on your laurels and be the best that you can be, you don’t need to be top student or receive commendations to do YOUR best!

Please look after Miss Lowe as well as you have me. I have felt supported at all levels.

My parting words to you are: look after yourselves, your families (both blood and SPS) and your mental health. Take care and be happy.

If you fancy joining in one of the next events, please contact [email protected] - all standards are warmly welcomed and there’s no better way to spend a lovely sunny day! (Next event is Wed 14 Jul 21 – Tom has the details!).

Hopefully see you there!

It was really good to see WO2 (CSM) Cornforth, who is out of role at ITB Catterick, I caught up with her, SSgt Jones, SSgt Tudor and SSgt Wilkinson-Ramm. It proved to be a very useful morning…in God’s County. 😜

It's been a busy month for the 3 Rifles Detachment. Pte Insley won the "Chosen Man Award", an award for the top Rifleman within Battalion, which is unheard of for an attached arm to win! He is outstanding in his role as an MPA, consistently at the front on PT and excelled in a recent Coy range package.
Pte Gittens was selected to represent HQ Coy on the recent Cairn Patrol Competition, spending 3 days completing a 40KM route across the Pentland Hills whilst carrying 25Kg completing a range of military skills along the way, including navigation and an 80m river crossing.

Both Pte Insley and Pte Gittens are a credit to both the Battalion, SPS Branch and the Corps.
Well done👏🏻👏👏
