🌿🌳 It’s the final days of National Hedgerow Week! 🌳🌿
As we round off the week, we’re highlighting the importance of 'coppice corridors' - an overlooked but vital part of our hedgerow networks.
Coppicing is a traditional management technique where trees are cut back close to ground level to rejuvenate old and sparse hedgerows where laying isn't an option. Whilst it can look pretty drastic at first, it encourages strong, dense regrowth and allows extra trees to be planted in the gaps - helping to extend the life of the hedge and create a richer habitat.
When restored hedgerows link together across farmland and countryside, they form coppice corridors - vital green pathways that allow wildlife to move between remote habitats and thrive.
By supporting healthier, better-connected hedgerows, coppice corridors play an essential role in building more resilient landscapes for the future 💚

🌳 From Strategy to Action: Bringing Elm Trees Back to Hampshire 🌳

Hampshire’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy sets out a county-wide vision for nature recovery - focusing effort where it can make the greatest difference for habitats, wildlife and landscape connectivity.

🌳 Right tree, right place: Hawthorn - Crataegus monogyna🌳
Hawthorn is one of Hampshire’s most valuable native trees - and a great example of why planting the right tree in the right place matters.

🌱 Hawthorn grows happily in hedgerows, fields, parks , urban greenspaces and woodland edges. It’s tough, adaptable, and happy in a wide range of soils, making it ideal for exposed sites and community planting projects.

Hawthorn one of the most important trees for wildlife as throughout the year it supports insects, birds and small mammals:
🌼 Spring blossom provides vital nectar for pollinators
🍒 Autumn and Winter its berries (haws) are an important food source for birds
🌿 Dense growth makes excellent natural shelter and boundaries
