On this day in 1548, Katherine Parr died at Sudeley Castle, only days after giving birth to her daughter, Mary. She was just 36.

Katherine had survived the Tudor court, become the first Englishwoman to publish an original work in print under her own name, served as Regent and helped to shape the education of the future Elizabeth I.

Her final resting place is the Chapel, St Mary’s Church, at Sudeley, the only private castle in England with a queen buried in its grounds.

Today, we remember Katherine, 478 years on, in the place she called home.

Katherine Parr died at Sudeley Castle in on 5th September 1548, and she was laid to rest in the Chapel, St Mary’s Church, within the castle grounds.

But that wasn’t quite the end of her story.

Centuries later, Katherine’s grave was rediscovered and opened on several occasions. One visitor even confessed to taking a tooth and some hair from her coffin.

According to his later account, after experiencing a rather unnerving encounter at Sudeley, his wife persuaded him to return them.

Today, Katherine rests once again at Sudeley, the only private castle in England to have a queen buried within its grounds.

You can view her tooth and a lock of her hair, as well as several of her possessions including her prayer book and a love letter to Thomas Seymour on display in our exhibition rooms.

We will be celebrating Katherine Parr Week until Sunday 6th September.

Come and visit us this weekend to discover more about one of England’s most fascinating queens.

On this day, 30th August 1548, Katherine Parr gave birth to her only child at Sudeley Castle.

After four marriages and years spent at the heart of the Tudor court, 36-year-old Katherine finally became a mother to a daughter, Mary Seymour.

She had moved to Sudeley earlier that year with her fourth husband Thomas Seymour, making the castle her home for what should have been a hopeful new chapter away from the pressures of court.

But joy unfortunately turned to tragedy quickly.

Following Mary's birth, Katherine became seriously ill, and just six days later, on 5th September, she died here at Sudeley.

Mary’s own story remains one of Tudor history’s mysteries. After the ex*****on of her father the following year, records of her become increasingly scarce and disappear altogether after 1550.

More than 475 years later, Katherine still rests here, in the Chapel, St Mary’s Church. You can visit her tomb on your visit.

This week, from Tuesday 1st- Sunday 6th September, Queen Katherine Parr: A Royal Legacy at Sudeley Castle will explore her life beyond the familiar story of Henry VIII’s surviving wife, including her writing, faith, relationships, motherhood and final days at Sudeley.
