Fire Sprinklers are designed to extinguish small fires or contain growing fires, until the fire and rescue services arrive. Fire sprinkler systems are heat activated; commonly used as a primary fire protection solution for almost 150 years. It is thought that the oldest sprinkler system in Britain was fitted in 1812 in the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane. Things have come a long way since then!
Automatic sprinkler systems are now sophisticated and highly effective. They are designed to only activate when the temperatures rise to fire-induced temperatures - usually somewhere between 155 to 165 degrees Fahrenheit - one sprinkler head at a time. A liquid-filled glass bulb bursts, or a soldered metal link melts at a given temperature, allowing a plug to drop out, releasing the water. Most fires usually require only one or two sprinklers to be extinguished.... A little water damage in one room, may save a whole building and it’s occupants.
All newly built flats in the UK, over 11metres, now, by law have to fit a fire sprinkler system. This is very welcome government legislation - helping to keep our families, friends, fire and rescue services stay safe.
