Since 1987, the Lighthouse and former keepers’ cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council. The surrounding Nature Reserve contains rockpools, clifftop grassland, a beach and wetland habitat. Check our monthly opening times for climbing the lighthouse 137 steps and for the gift shop and takeaway hot drinks, events and information on weddings, parties, room hire and more in our photos. Is it a Moth? Is It a Butterfly? No! Its………..actually, yeah, it probably is a moth or a butterfly! But if you want to know for sure get booked on to our moth morning on Tuesday 22nd September 9.30-11am. Find out which moths are eating that retro outfit from the 90’s in your wardrobe, try and identify what it was that was fluttering around your bathroom light the other night, and work out if that cocoon you found in the garden was a moth or a butterfly.
This is an event for 16’s and over and Booking is essential.

We’re pleased to announce a new and exclusive event focused on moth ID and citizen science for ADULTS. Learn about the moth species that call the North East home, before helping to identify and log the moths that have arrived in our moth traps overnight. This event is aimed at beginners and will be hosted by staff that are very new to moth trapping themselves.
Tuesday 22nd September 9:30am-11:00am.

Are you in to photography? Would you like to showcase your skills? If so, St Mary’s Lighthouse invites you to enter out photography competition.
The theme is: ‘Wildlife of St Mary’s Island’
Any wildlife that is found at or visits St Mary’s Island is eligible.
Groups will be split between Children – 16yrs and under, and Adults - 17yrs+
Pictures should be sent to:

[email protected] and should contain your name, age and a way to contact you.

Winners will receive an annual pass to the lighthouse will have their winning pictures displayed within the Lighthouse.

Do you have an interest in being a little bit arty, Have the kids finally gone back to school, do you need some quiet away from the noise of daily life, do you want to try something different and still be able to make it back for the school run? If the answer is ‘Yes’ to any of the above questions then we have the right event for you!

Join us on Tuesday 15th September for some peaceful Coastal Collaging. Learn about the nature around St Marys island, have a guided rockpool session before then using recycled materials to collage using the island and Lighthouse as inspiration, all without those noisy kids!!

Thanks for coming to St Mary's 128th Birthday! Amazingly, the rain held off for the birthday party so we had singing good conversations about our heritage and free cake! Thanks to special guests Blyth Tall Ships Sea Shanty Singers, Friends of LV50, Seaton Sluice and old Hartley local history society (Seaton Sluice Watch House Museum) and Fusiliers Museum of Northumberland.
