A member of the public discovered a concerning object on Drigg Beach and alerted the Coastguard, providing them with precise location coordinates using what3words (what3words.com). This facilitated swift locating and response from the team.

Upon arrival, the team assessed the object and sent photos to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team for further evaluation.

Last night, we worked alongside colleagues from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service and our partner organisations during a joint exercise aboard Vessel Callan, the Sellafield Dive Boat.

The scenario involved a 999 call after concerns for the crew aboard the vessel after harbour commissioner staff heard a carbon monoxide alarm sounding and not witnessing anyone come off board

Firefighters conducted multiple BA entries to locate and isolate the source, ventilate the vessel and recover casualties.

Coastguard Rescue Officers stretchered casualties from the vessel to a casualty collection point and Coastguard Rescue Swimmer was also deployed to recover casualties from the water.

The operation was jointly coordinated from a forward command point, with 6 casualties recovered and treated throughout the exercise.

Joint exercises of this nature are extremely beneficial. They allow emergency services and partners to practise our response and joint decision-making, whilst reinforcing the specialist skills and capabilities each organisation brings.

Itโ€™s also a timely reminder for boat owners of the importance of having a carbon monoxide alarm, not only in the home but also aboard boats of any size. Please ensure you check yours routinely.โ€

๐Ÿ‘ Our thanks go to Whitehaven Fire Station, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service, for organising the exercise, along with the Sellafield Ltd Dive Team, Whitehaven Marina and Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners for hosting.

A great training exercise last night, putting our Lost & Missing Person Search procedures into practice.

An Officer in Charge coordinated three Search Teams from an established Command Point, carrying out an initial 500m hub search around the Initial Planning Point.

The casualty was located, but sadly assessed as having injuries incompatible with life, so on this rare occasion Basic Life Support was not commenced. This is in accordance with Search And Rescue guidance.

With concerns of possible foul play, the team quickly transitioned to scene preservation, establishing a cordon and applying our scene management principles, until Police arrived and took over.

A valuable exercise reinforcing leadership, search management, casualty assessment, scene preservation and teamwork.

๐Ÿฉนโ›‘๏ธ Last weekโ€™s training consisted of casualty care practice, completing Patient Report Forms with specific information including observations, assessments and details of any treatment interventions provided, alongside the use of the three different stretchers our team carry.

Each stretcher is used across a variety of environments and rescue disciplines, including Rope, Water and Search Rescues, as well as routine casualty extraction.

๐Ÿ” Did you know that, nationwide, as part of our medical packs, all HM Coastguard vehicles also carry defibrillators/AEDs? All of our officers are trained in Casualty Care, covering a range of trauma and medical illness topics as part of a syllabus overseen by our HMCG Medical Director and Clinical Governance Board.
