In the latest episode of our Local Heroes series, Sarah meets Denise, co-founder of the much-loved Nantwich Bookshop and Coffee Lounge , an independent business that has become a true community hub in the heart of Nantwich.

What began 25 years ago as a small bookshop has grown into so much more. From introducing one of the town’s first dog-friendly cafés to launching a mobile bookshop that will bring books, stories and community to schools and rural areas across Cheshire East, Denise and Steve have continually found new ways to connect people through a shared love of reading.

It’s businesses like these that make our local area so special. Places built on passion, resilience and a genuine commitment to bringing communities together. Denise and Steve remind us that the best independent businesses don’t just serve their customers, they enrich the places they call home.

For this edition of Local Heroes, Sarah meets Liz Parkin, founder of Nantwich Buddies, a remarkable community initiative that’s changing lives, one conversation at a time.

After relocating to the area 18 years ago without knowing anyone, Liz began volunteering to build connections. Since then, she’s gone on to support three volunteer organisations, and during lockdown founded Nantwich Buddies to support people experiencing loneliness and isolation.

Within just two weeks, more than 40 volunteers had stepped forward. What started as a simple idea has grown into an incredible community network, offering everything from coffee mornings and friendly visits to signposting people towards the support they need. Volunteers like Geoff have become part of something truly special.

Now, Liz is asking for your help.

Nantwich Buddies is looking for more volunteers, whether that’s becoming a hospital driver, popping in for a cup of tea and a chat, or simply giving 30–90 minutes every fortnight to someone who could really benefit from your company.

A small amount of your time could make a world of difference to someone else’s.

Listen as Sarah shares the fascinating story behind Pempe’s Pavilion with The American Countess.

Originally built for the Chelsea Flower Show, this charming Georgian Gothic pavilion was purchased from a local Whitchurch resident during the restoration of the grounds. On viewing, Sarah knew it had found its forever home at Combermere!

Named Pempe’s Pavilion in honour of Sarah’s mother, it’s one of several special places across the estate that pay tribute to the people who have shaped Combermere Abbey’s story. These thoughtful spaces are woven into the landscape, each carrying memories, meaning and a lasting connection to family.

When Sarah Callander Beckett inherited Combermere Abbey in 1992, she made a promise to secure the future of an estate with almost 900 years of history. Together with her husband Peter, what followed was decades of careful restoration, breathing new life into buildings that had fallen into serious disrepair and preserving them for future generations.

One of the most remarkable and challenging projects has been The North Wing, which took almost 16 years to complete. Almost derelict and on the Historic England Buildings at Risk Register, it has been lovingly restored into the elegant, adult-only retreat you see today. A project that took years of planning, specialist craftsmanship, inspiring interior design and an unwavering commitment to protecting Combermere’s heritage.
