Following last year’s stakeholder consultation, North Somerset Council’s Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) review consultation is now open for residents, businesses and community groups.

The public consultation invites local people to have their say on measures to make public spaces in the area more welcoming for everyone:

PSPOs are an important tool in tackling antisocial behaviour in public spaces such as parks, seafronts and shopping areas. The orders were first introduced by North Somerset Council in 2017 to deter individuals or groups committing antisocial behaviour in specific places in North Somerset.

PSPOs must be reviewed every three years, and the last review took place in 2023. This consultation looks into whether the current PSPOs are fair and appropriate and if any updates are required to ensure they remain effective and targeted.

After receiving reports that a young individual had taken a large knife from a local store, Simon responded immediately. He swiftly located and detained the individual, safely removing the weapon to eliminate any immediate risk to the public. With the assistance of colleagues, he then restrained the individual until police officers arrived and made an arrest.

Simon’s decisive and composed actions were potentially life-saving. In light of the significant threat posed to members of the public, his professionalism and calm judgement helped prevent what could have escalated into a far more serious incident.

Simon, alongside the wider Street Warden team work within Weston Business Improvement District - BID, and serve the town centre seven days a week. The team provides vital support to vulnerable adults, assists with missing children, and works closely with local businesses. In the past three months alone, they have recovered £2,680 worth of stolen goods for local traders, demonstrating their continued commitment to community safety and wellbeing.

Supporting North Somerset’s town centre businesses this winter -

North Somerset Council is working closely with town centre businesses and partners to help create a safer, more welcoming environment where commercial organisations can thrive.

The Winter of Action has now begun, with the first of a series of coordinated multi-agency Days of Action taking place across Weston-super-Mare town centre and identified hotspot areas. This initiative is designed to support local businesses during the busy winter period, while improving safety, reducing anti-social behaviour and supporting vulnerable people.

Partners involved include Avon & Somerset Police, North Somerset Council’s Safer Communities team, Weston BID, outreach support services, and CCTV & Community Response teams, all working together to deliver targeted, visible activity in town centre hotspot areas.

Through this partnership approach, we are:

• Supporting vulnerable individuals and helping them access the right services
• Engaging directly with local businesses and staff
• Increasing high-visibility and plain-clothes patrols
• Using ASB and PSPO powers where necessary
• Protecting and helping to secure vacant properties in town
• Working jointly with Avon & Somerset Police to deter crime, reduce disorder and improve safety

This is the first of a number of planned Days of Action, reinforcing our commitment to working with town centre businesses to create safer, more welcoming places for customers, employees and visitors.

Together, we’re helping North Somerset’s town centres remain vibrant, secure and open for business throughout the winter and beyond.
