Another Day of Action in Weston Town Centre

Yesterday, officers from the Weston Town Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team, supported by colleagues from North Somerset Community Response and our CCTV operators, were once again out working to keep Weston a safe and welcoming place for everyone.

Through proactive patrols and targeted activity focused on tackling anti-social behaviour and criminality, officers achieved the following results:

✅ 1 male prolific offender arrested for breaching court bail conditions within days of being released from prison
✅ 1 female prolific shoplifter arrested on two fail-to-appear warrants
✅ 1 male reported for seven breaches of his Community Protection Notice
✅ 6 e-scooters seized
✅ 1 person reported for multiple traffic offences

And before the keyboard mechanics fire up in the comments section, we'll save you the trouble: yes, riding privately-owned e-scooters in public places remains illegal. That's the rule, and we're just enforcing it.

While these may seem like small actions individually, they all contribute to making Weston town centre a safer environment for residents, visitors and businesses. Our officers will continue to work alongside partner agencies to tackle those who negatively impact our community and to ensure the town remains a place where people can live, work and visit with confidence.

Parents and carers - do you know the risks of 'urban exploring'? 🚫 ❌

We want to remind parents and carers of the risks and dangers of ‘urban exploring’ – a rising trend on social media where young people enter abandoned or off-limits buildings to film and share content online.

While it may seem adventurous, this activity carries serious legal and safety risks.

As parents and carers you can:

✅ Start the conversation. Talk to your young person about the dangers – both legal and physical – of urban exploring.
✅ Be aware of online trends and monitor social media activity that may encourage unsafe or unlawful behaviour. Encourage responsible content creation and respect for private property.
🩵 Remind your child that no amount of online attention is worth risking their safety, wellbeing or future.

Entering private property without permission is trespassing. If someone enters with intent to steal or cause damage, it could be classed as burglary – a criminal offence that can lead to time in prison.

Derelict buildings may also be structurally unsafe, with unstable floors, hidden drops, broken glass, or hazardous materials like asbestos. Climbing fences or rooftops for content can result in serious injury or even death.

Social media platforms often glorify risky behaviour for views and likes, which can pressure young people into taking dangerous actions without fully understanding the consequences.

🚗 Dangerous and anti-social driving will not be tolerated in North Somerset.

Enforcement activity has increased, with more vehicle seizures, traffic offence reports and action against drivers causing disruption in our communities.

Working with Avon and Somerset Police, we're tackling issues including anti-social behaviour, dangerous driving, excessive noise and unauthorised car meets to help keep residents safe.

What would you do if you witnessed harassment?

Over 70% of women in the UK say they’ve experienced sexual harassment in public. When you see it happening, what do you do? Most of us like to think we'd step in. But in the moment, it can be hard to know what to do.

UN Women UK's Bystander campaign shines a light on the power of bystander intervention and reminds us that creating safer communities is everyone's responsibility.

If you see something that doesn't feel right, you don't have to put yourself at risk, but you can make a difference. Whether it's checking in with someone, creating a distraction, or reporting a concern, small actions can help challenge unacceptable behaviour and support those affected.

🚭 We're continuing to tackle the sale of illegal to***co and va**ng products to protect communities across North Somerset 🚭

A Weston-super-Mare shop owner has been sentenced after our Trading Standards team seized £10,000 worth of illegal to***co and va**ng products.

The sale of illegal to***co and vapes:
❌ avoids important safety controls
❌ undermines legitimate businesses
❌ is often linked to wider criminal activity.

The shop owner was given a 12-month Community Order with a requirement to complete 100 hours of unpaid work, and also pay £8,500 towards our investigation costs.

Yesterday afternoon, North Somerset Magistrates’ Court granted a three-month extension to the closure order imposed on a business premises in Weston-super-Mare that had been found to be involved in the sale of illicit to***co and vapes. The extension follows ongoing concerns regarding unlawful trading activity at the location and reflects the court’s recognition of the continuing need to protect the community from the sale of counterfeit and unregulated goods.

Police and partner agencies are aware that there may be other businesses operating in the area that are involved in the sale of illicit to***co and illegal va**ng products, however, intelligence from the public remains vital in helping us build the evidence needed to act.
