Year 9 Blunt Truth Session

Last week, our Year 9 students took part in the Blunt Truth knife crime awareness sessions, delivering a powerful and thought-provoking message about the realities and consequences of carrying a knife. The sessions were both informative and impactful, helping students to understand the serious legal, personal and social implications of knife crime, as well as the devastating effect it can have on individuals, families and communities. Delivered in an engaging and age-appropriate way, the talks encouraged students to reflect on their choices, challenge misconceptions, and build the confidence to make safe, positive decisions.

Many thanks to all our visitors who led these incredible, educational sessions.

Over the recent long weekend - right in the middle of the school holidays - Weston-super-Mare saw a significant increase in visitors, with many people heading to the seafront and places like Marine Lake to enjoy the warm weather.

Behind the scenes, our Safer Stronger North Somerset and Weston Seafront teams worked hard to help keep everyone safe and ensure our public spaces could be enjoyed responsibly.

👣 Increased patrols across busy areas
Community Response Officers and Beach Rangers carried out additional patrols across key locations, with a particular focus on peak evening periods. Their presence helped provide reassurance, offer advice, and engage directly with those using the space.

🤝 Working closely with partners
We worked alongside Avon and Somerset Police, who included Weston in their Bank Holiday patrol plans. During a particularly busy day across North Somerset - with over 180 calls received and several serious incidents requiring urgent attention - officers still responded quickly to incidents locally and supported activity on the ground.

âś… Taking action when needed
Where anti-social behaviour or breaches of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) were identified, officers took appropriate action. This included addressing issues such as alcohol-related behaviour, littering and anti-social conduct, helping to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

📊 Putting activity into context
While there was a short period of increased reports around Marine Lake on Bank Holiday Monday - likely linked to the good weather and higher footfall - incidents were limited and time-specific rather than ongoing. Officers attended promptly and dealt with the situation as and when needed.

🙌 Supporting positive behaviour
As well as enforcement, engagement remains a key focus. Our Beach Rangers continue to provide advice and guidance, and our Youth Connections Hub is supporting outreach work with young people to encourage safe and respectful use of shared spaces.

We’re proud of the work our teams and partners do - often under pressure and behind the scenes - to support both residents and visitors, especially during busy holiday periods.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the weekend as safe and enjoyable as possible 🙏

âť— Kitchen Knife Disposal - Keeping Our Crews Safe âť—

We’re reminding residents across North Somerset about the importance of disposing of kitchen knives safely after a dangerous item was found in a recycling box during collections today.

A meat cleaver was discovered in a recycling container with the blade completely uncovered. Items like this pose a serious risk to our recycling and waste crews, who regularly handle materials by hand when sorting during collections.

Knives should never be placed loose in recycling boxes. Not only does this put our crews at risk of serious injury, but it can also endanger others if left exposed.

Please make sure you dispose of knives responsibly using one of the following options:

🔪Use a knife surrender bin. Locations include: Weston-super-Mare Town Hall, between TK Maxx and Sainsbury’s in Worle or Nailsea Police Station
🔪Place in your black wheelie bin - Before doing so, carefully wrap the knife in thick cardboard, secure it firmly with tape, and ensure the blade is fully covered.
🔪Take them to your local recycling centre

If you are transporting knives to a surrender bin or the recycling centre, please wrap them in a towel and/or bag to prevent injury.

By disposing of knives correctly, you’re helping to protect our crews and keep your community safe. Please take a moment to make sure sharp items are always handled and discarded responsibly.
