📢 Birnbeck Pier work progresses at pace with operational discussions now underway 📢

Good progress is being made on the restoration of Birnbeck Pier in Weston-super-Mare, with work now also moving forward on the future operational arrangements for this nationally significant site.

We’re holding discussions with experienced heritage organisations and operators about the future management of the pier, ahead of its long-awaited re-opening to the public next summer.

Our priority is to secure a sustainable future for the pier and managing Birnbeck Pier will be complex. We are having discussions with experienced heritage organisations and operators who have the skills, expertise and capacity to run the site on a not-for-profit basis - with any future operating model also recognising the important role of local community and volunteer groups.

We’d like to thank all our volunteers for the incredible work they continue to do which remains an important part of Birnbeck’s future. We want that strong community connection to continue as we move into this exciting new chapter in the pier’s history .

🔗 More information about the Birnbeck Pier project is available in the comments.

Today we’re supporting national Clean Air Day 💚

Air pollution harms every organ in our body and can shorten our lives by contributing towards chronic illness.

Cleaner air starts with us all. Why not try one change today to breathe better and move smarter – like leaving your car at home for a short trip and walking, wheeling, cycling or using public transport instead.

Our Better Health North Somerset team recommends that adults aim for 150 minutes a week of physical activity – that’s 20 minutes a day.

🔄️ Small swaps can make a big difference, because every move matters.

To find out more about Clean Air Day visit the Clean Air Hub – link in comments.

This week is national Men’s Health Week led by Men's Health Forum which highlights the importance of encouraging open conversations and improving access to physical and mental health and wellbeing support 💙

In Weston-super-Mare, we’ve installed mental health support plaques on benches in key locations, including along the seafront. The benches provide a quiet place for everyone to pause for a moment of calm, alongside clear information about where to find help if you need it.

By scanning the QR code or using the web link https://linktr.ee/NSSupportbench on the bench plaque, anyone can quickly access trusted support, including Samaritans and local services.

Men are often less likely to seek help with their physical and mental ill health, so initiatives like this aim to create simple, visible opportunities to connect people with the right support, in a way that suits the individual’s needs.

We’re also on the look out for more locations for mental health support benches across North Somerset – see comments for more details.

👉 Find out more about the mental health support services available at https://linktr.ee/NSSupportbench

If you’re worried about someone else, please share this information with them.

And if anyone is in immediate danger, please call 999.

Better Transport Week starts today! 🌿🚶‍♀️🚴‍♂️🚍 First up, we’re celebrating the brilliant active travel success of North Somerset schools, and the young people leading the way.

🏆 Becket Primary School is setting the standard, achieving Outstanding Modeshift STARS accreditation, increasing active travel to over 80%, and earning both regional and national recognition, even presenting at the prestigious National Modeshift STARS Awards at the Royal Society.

And they’re not alone… 33 schools took part in this year's Big Walk and Wheel challenge, logging nearly 48,000 active journeys! This is equivalent to:

🚴 over 71,000 miles travelled, almost three trips around the Earth!
🌱 around 11 tonnes of CO₂ saved
💪 over 10,000 hours of physical activity.

A huge congratulations to standout schools including Mead Vale Community Primary, Worle Village Primary, and St Peter’s CE Primary, as well as those making incredible progress like Milton Park Primary and Ashcombe Primary.

We’re proud to support , a celebration of how transport can bring people together and make everyday journeys better.

⚽ There is

Research shows incidents of domestic abuse can increase during major football tournaments, but football doesn't cause abuse. Responsibility always lies with the perpetrator.

If you're experiencing domestic abuse, support is available 24/7 through the North Somerset Domestic Abuse Freefone Support Line on 0800 694 9999.

If you're worried about your own behaviour and recognise you need help to change, support is available too. Taking responsibility is the first step, and specialist services can help you build healthier, safer relationships.

This World Cup, let's remember that everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home.

North Somerset Council and the North Somerset Partnership Against Hate are deeply concerned by recent national incidents and the rise in retaliatory tensions and hate-related behaviour seen across parts of the UK.

Tragic events, including the murder of Henry Nowak in Southampton and the recent stabbing in Belfast, have understandably caused shock and distress. However, we are equally troubled by the subsequent hostility and prejudice directed towards communities who have no connection to these incidents - including members of the Sikh community - and the unrest seen in their aftermath. Such responses only deepen division and harm innocent people.

Closer to home, we strongly condemn the racial abuse and assault of a taxi driver on Clevedon Road, Weston-super-Mare, on Saturday 6 June. The fact that members of the public and a police officer were also assaulted as they sought to intervene makes this incident particularly concerning. There is no place for such behaviour in North Somerset.

We encourage everyone in North Somerset to remain calm, show compassion and look out for one another. Differences should never be a cause for division or harm. Our shared values of respect, kindness and community are far stronger than those who seek to spread hate.

There is no place for hatred in North Somerset - and together, we will continue to stand united against it.

We’ve been busy behind the scenes at Knightstone Harbour 👷‍♂️⚓

Recently, we’ve redistributed stone across the area to keep access safe, even and ready for use by the RNLI and permit holders. This essential work helps vessels launch and return smoothly — reducing the risk of damage and making the harbour safer for everyone.

A huge thank you to our contractors, EJ McGrath, for doing a fantastic job delivering these improvements 🙌
