Marine Lake in Weston is open again! 🌊

The lake has been temporarily closed since Monday 15 June to enable our seafront rangers to carry out maintenance on the two sluice gates.

This was part of a series of temporary closures planned for regular maintenance. The gates require frequent checks to make sure that they are operating effectively.

Future temporary closures are currently planned to take place on the following dates:

1️⃣ Lake due to close on Tuesday 14 July and reopen at 9am on Friday 17 July

2️⃣Lake due to close on Wednesday 9 September and reopen at 9am on Friday 11 September

3️⃣ Lake due to close on Monday 12 October and reopen at 9am on Wednesday 14 October

4️⃣ Lake due to close on Tuesday 24 November and reopen at 9am Friday 27 November

No dredging took place while the lake was temporarily closed, and we don’t currently have further dredging planned.

Marine Lake in Weston is closed temporarily until Thursday 🚧

We closed the lake this morning (15 June), in-line with our previous announcement.

The lake is due to reopen at 9am on Thursday 18 June. This allows for expected high tides to overtop the causeway and refill the lake.

We’re draining the lake to enable our seafront rangers to carry out regular maintenance on the two sluice gates. The gates require frequent checks to make sure that they are operating effectively.

No dredging will be taking place while the lake is temporarily closed, and we don’t currently have further dredging planned.

This temporary closure is part of a series planned for maintenance.

Future temporary closures are currently planned to take place on the following dates:

Marine Lake in Weston – planned temporary closures starting from this coming Monday (15 June) 📣🌊

A series of short temporary closures are planned over the coming months for maintenance at Marine Lake in Weston-super-Mare.

This will enable our seafront rangers to carry out regular maintenance on the two sluice gates. The gates require frequent checks to make sure that they are operating effectively.

During these closures, we plan to:
🌊 Open the sluice gates
🌊 Empty the lake
🌊 Carry out a full visual inspection of the sluice gates
🌊 Carry out routine maintenance, including greasing and removing debris
🌊 Allow water into the lake during a small number of overtopping tides to allow the natural flushing of silt out of the lake. This will enable us to assess the effectiveness of the sluice gates and assess levels of silt in the lake
🌊 Close the sluice gates in time for two overtopping tides to replenish water levels in the lake

No dredging will take place while the lake is temporarily closed, and we don’t currently have further dredging planned.

Lovely to see Waverley Excursions in Weston-super-Mare bay last night 🥰

Our seafront rangers were in attendance to support Waverley's crew with footpath closures on Knightstone Island to maintain a safe area, as they have done in previous years.

They also supported by ensuring only permit holders launched from the slipway ahead of Waverley's arrival and departure.

The team inspected the timber fender posts and blocks where the the paddle steamer docked, as well as stone re-distribution in the harbour area ahead of her arrival.

Glendale Services also made sure the walking routes and whole area was looking as it should.

A great team effort. Well done 🙌

🌊A Day Out in Weston 🏖️

A day out in Weston should be simple.
Enjoy the beach. Spend time with family and friends. Leave it as you found it.

But every day, large amounts of litter are left behind along the seafront.

In the UK alone, more than two million pieces of litter are dropped every single day.
A lot of that ends up on beaches, where it doesn’t just disappear.

Even when litter starts to break down, it doesn’t go away. It turns into smaller pieces, including microplastics, which pollute the environment and enter the food chain.

This has real consequences.
Wildlife can mistake litter for food or become tangled in it.
Habitats are damaged. Water and sand become polluted.

And once it’s on the beach, it can easily be carried out to sea.

Weston is a place people come to enjoy.
Keeping it clean relies on everyone doing their part.

🚮So, if you’re visiting, please take your litter home with you, or use the bins provided.

A small action makes a real difference.

⚠️Dangerous mudflats and fast incoming tides ⚠️

When the tide goes out on Weston Main Beach, a very large area of sand and mudflats is exposed. This can make it tempting to walk a long way out from the promenade, but the distance can be misleading. At low tide, the sea can be nearly one mile from the shoreline, and people can find themselves hundreds of metres further out than they realised.

Although the beach may appear safe, conditions can change quickly. Weston sits on the Bristol Channel, which has one of the highest tidal ranges in the world. On some days, the difference between low and high tide can be more than 10 metres. Once the tide turns, the water can move in far faster than people expect, especially for anyone who has continued onto the outer beach or mudflats.

During busy periods, large numbers of people may be spread across the beach at the same time as our Seafront Rangers are dealing with other urgent incidents, including lost children, water safety concerns and anti-social behaviour. Rangers work first to prevent people from going too far out by monitoring conditions, giving clear warnings and directing visitors back towards the main beach area. Where people have already continued onto the mudflats and are at risk, rangers also help guide them safely back to shore. This work is an important part of keeping the seafront safe, but it must be managed alongside other immediate demands on the service.

For your safety, please stay within the main beach area, keep children close by, and do not walk out onto the dangerous mudflats when the tide is out. What may seem like a short walk can quickly become a long and unsafe return.

🏖️Bringing your dog to the beach this half term? 🏖️

🐕Dogs are welcome, but please follow local public space protection orders (PSPO’s)

• Dogs are restricted on certain parts of Weston main beach between the hours of 9am – 7pm from 1 May and 30 September
• Dogs are required to always be on a lead when walking on the Promenade.
• Dogs are not permitted on Marine Lake beach at anytime.
• Always carry a poo bag: bag it and bin it, please don't fling it!
