Another great update from your local Bolton West Labour MP Phil Brickell MP
FRIDAY UPDATE
Back to Parliament following Whitsun recess and straight into a busy week of questions, meetings and events.
First up on Monday, I attended a meeting with Foreign Office Minister, Stephen Doughty MP, to discuss further sanctions on Russia and the recent enforcement action against 'backdoor' sanction evasion by Russia.
Later, I attended a meeting in Parliament organised by Keogh's Solicitors. Recent dialogue between Keoghs, insurers and the Public Sector Fraud Authority has shown clear appetite for closer collaboration around data to strengthen fraud prevention, detection and disruption.
It was great to be able to share my views as someone with a career background in tackling financial crime and how partnership working is key to the government's Fraud Strategy.
On Tuesday, I worked on my objection letter to the Lee Hall development in Westhoughton. You can read this further down my page.
On Wednesday, as part of my roles as Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Anti Corruption and Responsible Tax, I organised a visit City of London Police for a series of meetings regarding anti-corruption, fraud prevention and anti-money laundering.
City of London Police is the UK's national lead force tackling fraud and economic crime. I organised the visit as it's vital that MPs learn about their powers and what resources they need.
As well as these meetings, I raised a number of issues this week on the floor of the House of Commons. In DEFRA questions, I asked about the government's ambition to improve access to waterways for leisure.
I took the opportunity in Northern Ireland Questions, I asked about the need for factual information about the prospect of prosecutions for Northern Ireland veterans.
At Business Questions, it was a pleasure to put on Parliamentary record Bolton Wanderers fantastic playoff win against Stockport and also praise the stewardship of Sharon Britton who has brought the club back from the brink of bankruptcy to the Championship.
With the Makerfield by-election round the corner, I also raised concerns about comments made by Reform UK's candidate stating Putin's Russia was 'within their rights' to annex Crimea.
Today, I was back in the constituency with a meeting at Cohens Chemist to meet representatives of the Independent Pharmacies Association to continue work discussing the development of the role of pharmacies in healthcare.
Later, I held a pop up surgery at Asda Middlebrook. This is an informal opportunity for shoppers to stop and chat with me about whatever is on their minds. This supplements my other private appointment surgeries I hold across the constituency and online. If you would like help from me, please contact on 01204 958436 and my team will help with the best way forward.
I will be out and about across Bolton West this weekend at various events so please say Hi if you spot me!
