Local Plan update

The Government has directed Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council to proceed with the draft Local Plan, following Full Council's decision on 3 September not to approve it for consultation.

We will now move forward with the consultation, which is expected to open on 11 September 2026, with full details on how to take part to be published on our website.

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council will review the next steps for its draft Local Plan after Full Council decided on 3 September to pause progress for a Regulation 19 consultation.

During the meeting, concerns were raised about whether sufficient water supply would be available to support the level of growth required to meet the Government's housing targets. Councillors concluded that these matters require further consideration before the plan can progress.

Council officers will now consider the reasons for Full Council's decision and assess the implications for the Local Plan timetable. The government will also be informed of the decision and its impact on the preparation of the borough's Local Plan.

💡 Does your organisation help reduce waste in the community?

The Kent Community Waste Prevention Fund is now open, offering grants of £500 to £5,000 for community organisations developing projects that reduce household waste through prevention, reuse and repair.

Whether you're planning a repair café, a sharing scheme or another community-led initiative, this funding could help bring your idea to life. Successful applicants will also have access to environmental sustainability training through the Low Carbon Kent Training Centre.

🐉 Tonbridge Lions Dragon Boat Race
On Sunday 6 September, head to the castle waters at the Watergate (Big Bridge) on Tonbridge High Street to cheer on teams battling it out in this thrilling annual event. Racing starts from 9am, with crews paddling for glory in the heats before the grand final. Best of all, all proceeds will be donated to local charities and good causes.

Round off the weekend with an evening of outdoor theatre at Tonbridge Castle on Sunday 6 September, from 4pm to 9.30pm.

Dedicated volunteers have been out and about helping to keep our parks and open spaces clean, tidy and litter-free including Carly Duffen and her children, pictured here 🙂
These efforts make a real difference and are greatly appreciated by the whole community. 💚
