🌊 Big changes are happening in the UK water sector right now—here is what it means for your home and your wallet! 📉👇

If you’ve noticed a jump in your utility bills recently, you aren't alone. Between massive regulatory shakeups, rising costs, and new environmental studies, the UK water industry is going through its biggest transition in decades.

Here are the top headlines from the last month and how you can protect your household budget and water quality:

💰 **The April 1st Price Hikes are Here:** Average water bills have officially risen to £639 for 2026–27. With utility costs going up, fighting hard water and limescale is more important than ever. Limescale forces your boiler and appliances to work twice as hard, quietly driving up your energy bills!

🧪 **The "Forever Chemical" Wake-Up Call:** A shocking new study found that toxic PFAS chemicals exceeded legal safety limits by over 13 times in some coastal waters. The biggest takeaway? Traditional water treatment networks aren't fully equipped to filter these out yet.

🔧 **The "Infrastructure MOT":** The government is cracking down on water companies, banning unfair executive bonuses, and introducing strict new property-by-property network inspections to stop leaks before they happen.

**The Good News?** You don’t have to wait for the utility companies to upgrade the grid to get pure, cost-efficient water. 💧

At **Friendly Water**, we help homes and businesses across London, Surrey, and the South East take control of their own water quality. From premium water softeners that slash your heating bills to advanced drinking water filters that remove impurities straight from the tap, we’ve got you covered.

🚨 Could your kitchen tap be a hidden risk to your heart health? 🚨 https://bit.ly/4vTqsP9
Most people managing high blood pressure look at their diet first. They cut out processed snacks and stop reaching for the salt shaker.
But a groundbreaking study featured in The Independent suggests we might be missing a major culprit: The water we drink.

🌊 The Rise of "Hidden Salt"
Due to rising sea levels and climate change, saltwater intrusion is becoming a global reality. Seawater is infiltrating the freshwater aquifers we rely on for drinking and cooking.

The research is startling: People exposed to higher salinity in their water face a 26% increased risk of hypertension.
⚠️ The invisible threat:
You don’t have to "taste" the salt for it to be affecting your health. Dissolved sodium can contribute significantly to your daily intake without you ever knowing it.
🛠️ How to take control:
While we can't stop the tides, we can change how we treat the water entering our homes. At Friendly Water, we advocate for advanced filtration to protect your family’s long-term wellbeing.

1️⃣ Reverse Osmosis (RO): The gold standard. RO systems strip away dissolved salts and sodium that standard filters miss.
2️⃣ Total Purity: Beyond salt, high-grade filtration removes "forever chemicals" (PFAS), heavy metals, and microplastics.
3️⃣ Healthier Living: Pure water doesn't just protect your heart—it makes your tea, coffee, and meals taste exactly as they should.

Your health is too important to leave to chance. Is it time to check what's actually in your tap water.

Is your tap water as safe as it was a month ago? 🚰🇬🇧
https://bit.ly/40Au360
It’s been four weeks since the UK Government released its landmark "A New Vision for Water" White Paper. While the plan promises a "Super Regulator" and a massive £104bn investment, the reality on the ground is changing fast:

📉 Bill Updates: Ofwat has confirmed a national average bill increase of £33 (5.4%) starting this April. While some areas face hikes up to £759, the money is strictly ringfenced to fix the millions of hours of sewage spills that plagued 2024.

🧪 The PFAS Plan: This month, the UK launched its first-ever strategy to tackle "forever chemicals." With the government now consulting on statutory limits for PFAS in drinking water, it’s clear that monitoring alone isn’t enough anymore.

⚖️ Executive Accountability: Under new laws, pollution cover-ups are now a criminal offence. We’re seeing a shift toward "MOT-style" checks on pipes to prevent failures before they reach your home.

Why wait for the system to catch up? 🛡️
Many are now choosing a "final barrier" for their homes. High-quality drinking water filters don't just protect you from microplastics and trace chemicals; they also help the planet by eliminating the need for single-use plastic bottles.

Friendly Water UK can help! As independent experts with 45 years of experience, we provide impartial advice on the most effective and economical purification systems for your specific area.

Today we are sharing some concerning information and the latest research about microplastics in popular teabag brands, which we believe is highly relevant to our work at Friendly Water, as we are dedicated to providing safe, clean drinking water to homes and businesses.

A recent analysis by Which? revealed that many popular UK tea brands, despite labeling themselves as "plastic-free," actually contain microplastics. Out of 28 brands examined, only four were genuinely plastic-free: Dragonfly, Twinings (string and tag only), Hampstead, and Pukka.

Brands like PG Tips, Tetley (especially herbal teabags with conventional polypropylene plastic), Typhoo, Yorkshire Tea, Teapigs, Brew Co, Good Earth, Aldi, Asda, Lidl, M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Waitrose own-brand teabags were found to contain polylactic acid (PLA). While PLA is plant-derived and biodegradable under specific conditions, it is still a plastic that breaks down into microscopic particles, which can then enter the bloodstream.

Even more concerning, research suggests that the heat from a hot cup of tea can cause these PLA particles to break down into even smaller, more easily absorbed, and potentially more toxic fragments. This means a significant number of popular teabag brands could be exposing consumers to a steady stream of microplastics.

Previous studies have linked microplastic exposure to oxidative stress, cellular and tissue damage, inflammatory responses, and gut microbiome disruption. Early research on PLA specifically has shown it can trigger intestinal damage, oxidative stress, DNA damage, and metabolic disturbances in the liver in animal testing.

Given our expertise in water treatment, this information reinforces the importance of our mission. As water treatment experts, we recommend reducing microplastic exposure by avoiding plastic water bottles and switching to filtered tap water at home. A home RO water filter, in particular, can remove microplastics and other contaminants from tap water, making it safer for drinking and for preparing tea and coffee.

Fertility experts list the household items, including plastic water bottles, that can affect your chances of conceiving: https://bit.ly/4q8Tzer

We wanted to share some important information regarding the impact of certain household items and chemicals on fertility, which is highly relevant to our mission at Friendly Water.
Recent findings from fertility experts highlight how everyday items, particularly plastic food containers and bottles, can affect conception chances. As you know, the advice for early pregnancy typically focuses on folic acid and avoiding alcohol or smoking. However, experts are increasingly warning about chemicals found in common household products that can disrupt hormones vital for reproductive functions.
These endocrine disruptors include perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), bisphenol A (BPA), and phthalates. They are present in various products like flooring, fizzy drinks, plastic packaging, cosmetics, and, significantly, plastic water bottles. A growing body of research links higher levels of these chemicals to increased miscarriage risk, lower fertility, and difficulty conceiving, especially considering the declining global fertility rates.

Experts recommend several steps to reduce exposure to PFAS:
* Reduce consumption of bottled water:** The best option is to switch to filtered tap water.
* Avoid heating food or drinks in plastic: ** Professor Channa Jayasena from Imperial College London emphasizes that heating in plastic, unless specifically designed for it, can cause chemicals to leach into food. Dr. Shanna Swan, a environmental epidemiologist, also strongly advises against microwaving plastic, noting that plasticizers are not chemically bound and will transfer to food in hot environments. This also applies to leaving plastic water bottles in hot cars. Read more: bit.ly/4q8Tzer

Installing a home drinking water filter, such as an RO (Reverse Osmosis) system, can effectively remove PFAS and other contaminants from tap water. This offers a continuous supply of pure, safe drinking water, directly addressing the risks associated with plastic water bottles.

"Forever chemicals” (PFAS) in tap water have been linked to a 33% increase in cancer rates.
PFAS - are synthetic chemicals that have been used in various products for decades due to their resistance to water, grease, and heat, and which do not break down easily and can accumulate in the environment and in living organisms.

Linking PFAS in Tap Water to Cancer:
Researchers at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) conducted an ecological study to examine the correlation between PFAS detections in public drinking water and cancer rates. Their findings suggest a clear link between the presence of PFAS in water and higher incidence rates of certain cancers: https://bit.ly/46dBUJ4

Hard water and limescale in the UK can be quite a costly issue for homeowners, adding £150-£300 to annual energy bill: https://bit.ly/4mBfnNi
Did you know that about 60% of the UK has hard or very hard water?
Hard water - is the water with a high mineral content, primarily calcium and magnesium, which can lead to limescale buildup in appliances like kettles, boilers, dishwashers, and washing machines. This reduces their efficiency, shortens their lifespan, and can even clog pipes, causing leaks and lower water pressure. British Water estimates that even a 1mm layer of limescale can increase energy consumption by 7-10%, adding £150-£300 to annual energy bills.

In the UK, London and the South East are particular hotspots for limescale, with levels exceeding 200 parts per million (ppm). In contrast, Scotland, much of Wales, and the North West generally have softer water. https://bit.ly/4mBfnNi
