🚩 We are proudly flying the Red Ensign, or the Red Duster as it is known, at County Hall today to commemorate Merchant Navy Day.

‘Fly the Red Ensign’ is an annual campaign run by the The Seafarers’ Charity to honour the men and women who kept Britain afloat during both world wars as well as celebrate modern-day merchant seafarers.

Our Chairman, Councillor Christopher Adegoke, led a special ceremony to mark the day which was attended by a host of dignitaries - including the mayor of Rushcliffe Borough Council, Cllr Richard Butler, and the Deputy Lieutenant, Martin Clegg - military veterans and Armed Forces representatives

Councillor Christopher Adegoke, said: "We are proudly flying the Red Ensign to convey a clear message to our Merchant Navy seafarers, past and present: You are the unsung heroes of our maritime heritage. Your resilience, professionalism, and unwavering commitment deserve our deepest respect."

🚧 Highways update: Micro asphalt 🚧
You wanted to see our roads being improved, and our teams are out there every day, doing just that.

Chris has been to Bingham in Rushcliffe to see the first micro asphalt works of the year. We agree it's not pretty, but it will settle down, and it's a really effective solution.

Micro asphalt works by sealing the road surface, preventing water from penetrating minor cracks, previous repairs, or shallow spots. This helps to reduce potholes and structural damage over time. The treatment can be applied in single or multiple coats, sometimes with a rough base layer to fill dips and holes, followed by a smooth top layer for a uniform finish.

Benefits are:
✅ Extends surface life: Adds 6–8 years or more to the lifespan of roads and footways.
✅ Cost-effective: Reduces life-cycle costs by 25–45% compared to traditional resurfacing.
✅ Quick application: Roads can often reopen within hours, minimizing disruption.
✅ Environmental advantages: Cold-applied process reduces carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to hot asphalt systems.
✅ Improved safety and comfort: Enhances skid resistance, reduces road noise, and improves ride quality.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Our approach is to use the right repair for the right road, whether that is a full resurfacing scheme or a micro asphalt resurface like the one being carried out today.

We are backing Nottinghamshire's roads with a record £180m investment. Since May 2025, over 100,000 potholes and defects have been repaired, and many thousands more are being sorted through planned resurfacing and preventative works.

🚩 Today is Merchant Navy Day 🚩

We are proud to fly the Red Ensign at County Hall today to honour the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy who have played a vital role in keeping Britain supplied and connected – including during both world wars.

Merchant seafarers continue to play a crucial role today, supporting our economy and helping to keep essential goods moving around the world. They also provide vital support to the Royal Navy through the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

Run by The Seafarers’ Charity, Merchant Navy Day provides us with an opportunity to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, recognise the contribution of today’s seafarers and celebrate the proud maritime heritage of our nation.

🚧 Highways update: Whole street approach🚧
You wanted to see our roads being improved, and our teams are out there every day, doing just that.

Councillor Bingham went to see some night works last week at the A38 near King's Mill Hospital in Kirkby in Ashfield. He went to see how we are making our work more efficient and less disruptive by deploying multiple teams simultaneously.

We know it's a bit frustrating when roadworks hold up your journeys. When we have major busy roads to repair, we tend to close them overnight. This is not only safer, but avoids too much disruption. Lots of teams working on the same stretch at once means we only need to close the road once. We had teams from drainage, resurfacing, electrical repairs, and lining all on site, as well as our traffic management workers to keep everybody safe.

These works are part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s record-breaking £180 million investment in highways. We're out there every day.
• Investment covers resurfacing, drainage, bridges, street lighting, safety improvements and preventative maintenance treatments across the county.
• The programme aims to keep roads safe, reduce deterioration, improve resilience, and support long-term transport efficiency.

🚸 New pedestrian crossing installed outside Nottinghamshire school 🚸

A new pedestrian crossing has been installed outside Gilthill Primary School in Kimberley as part of a major improvement scheme.

The puffin crossing boasts the latest technology and will make it easier for children, parents, carers and other pedestrians to cross the road when travelling to and from the school.

For families using the school each day, the new crossing will provide greater reassurance at one of the busiest times of the morning and afternoon.

This is another step towards making our roads safer for everyone, particularly children and young people, and part of our ongoing commitment to improve road safety across the county and investing in measures that help people walk, cycle and travel safely in their communities.

🚌 Great news from East Midlands Combined County Authority!

Following the announcement that CT4N would cease trading in August, further replacements for services have been announced.

In Nottinghamshire:

🚌 The 510 and 511 services are now run by Littles Travel.
🚌 The 18, 18A, 18B and 18X services are now run by Nottingham City Transport
🚌 The 66 service is now run by Kinchbus.

Great news for CT4N passengers as more replacement services are confirmed.

Following the closure of CT4N last Friday, Mayor Claire Ward and the EMCCA transport team have worked quickly with local bus operators to get services back online for the passengers and communities who rely on them.

We are pleased to share that service 29 between Long Eaton, New Sawley and Sandiacre will restart from Monday 24 August, as will the 510 and 511 services which will continue to run for passengers in Beeston, Toton, Attenborough and Stapleford. All three services will be operated by Littles Travel.

This follows earlier confirmation that services 18, 18A, 18B and 18X are now being operated by Nottingham City Transport, and that service 66 will be operated by Kinchbus from Monday 24 August 2026.

We’ll announce any further replacement services as soon as they are confirmed. The latest information on replacement services can be found on the EMCCA website – link in comments. Please check before you travel.
