Update from the Mayor of Wells, Cllr Denise Denis

Two wonderful communities celebrated their volunteers yesterday and I was delighted to attend both as Mayor. Cllr Jill Edmonds accompanied me to the WCN Volunteers Tea Party in the Town Hall where over 140 volunteers from across Wells enjoyed a wonderful tea event. They were thanked by Cllr Philip Welch who has been on the WCN since its inception and he introduced Annie Maw as the new President of WCN.
In the evening, Olivia my Mayoress, and I attended the Street Council Community Awards and Investiture of Cllr Peter Goater at Strode Theatre. We were treated to music from young musicians and Master of Ceremonies, Christian Lockyer, took us through the evening where the Chair’s Chain of Office was passed from Cllr Bryan Knickerbocker to Cllr Peter Goater, and the Vice Lord Lieutenant, Robert Drewett, introduced the 3 winners of 2026 Street Community Awards.

Getting to know Cllr Denise Denis, 652nd Mayor of Wells

Born in Africa, eldest of 5, Denise enjoyed a childhood in Wales and then Norfolk before attending University of Birmingham to study Biological Sciences. Denise’s work-life has almost been as varied as her house moves, and after gaining her degree she went on to train and work as a social worker. Later after starting her own family, she set up and ran a small food business in North London for 5 years, taught English whilst living in Italy, and ran a Care Home in Norfolk for 23 years.
Denise has 2 sons and 3 grandchildren and on retirement she decided to move to Wells and has not regretted it at all. Here in Wells, she has found the joy of becoming part of a community, living closer to family, becoming a grandmother, and developing friendships in this beautiful setting.
She has embraced retirement and the opportunities to join organisations such as U3A, Monday WI, Somerset Wildlife Trust and Wells City Bridge Club. Also offering her time as a gardener and guide at the Bishops’ Palace, serving as a visitor volunteer for Somerset Sight for 10 years, being a WCN volunteer, Neighbourhood Watch coordinator, listening to children reading at St Cuthbert’s Junior School and is currently Chair of Wells Dementia Alliance.
Denise was elected to Wells City Council in 2022. Becoming Mayor is a great privilege for Denise, particularly as she is a direct descendent of a Mayor of Launceston who served in the 1700s.
Her passions and interests are varied. She enjoys painting, reading, birdwatching, listening to music, walking, she is fluent in Italian, comfortable in French and can get by with a little German and Spanish.
Denise will be escorted by Olivia Denis, her daughter-in -law, as Mayoress, and will be very ably supported by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Sarah Powell.

Denise, we wish you well for the next year ahead.
