Conservative councillors have warned that the introduction of parking charges at North Northants Council-owned car parks in the town could be the ‘death knell’ for Wellingborough High Street.

I have written to Councillor Martin Griffiths at North Northamptonshire Council ahead of the Executive meeting on 15 September to raise concerns about the proposed parking charges in Wellingborough and Rushden, and to ask the Council to reconsider the proposals.

I would also encourage residents who are concerned about these proposals to contact their local Reform councillors and make their views known. Local residents deserve to have their voices heard before any final decision is made.

🅿️ Parking charges coming to Wellingborough & Rushden?

🚨REFORM-LED NORTH NORTHAMPTONSHIRE COUNCIL's OWN PARKING STRATEGY CONFIRMS PROPOSED CHARGES FOR WELLINGBOROUGH & RUSHDEN!

Reform-led NNC draft Car Parking Strategy explicitly says its “key change” is introducing charges in areas that are currently free.

In Wellingborough, both Jacksons Lane and the Multi-Storey Car Park are proposed for Band A charging - up to £10 for more than six hours.

In Rushden, Duck Street, John Street, Rectory Road, Portland Street and North Street are proposed for charges of up to £4 for more than six hours.

But we have to ask:
How can you have a Town Centre Masterplan to regenerate our high streets, while potentially making it more expensive to park there?

Wellingborough town centre is already struggling. We need more people visiting, more businesses thriving and more reasons to shop locally; not another barrier to visiting.

And this isn't just about Wellingborough. Residents and businesses in Rushden also need to know what these proposals could mean for their town centre.

🅿️ Free and affordable parking matters.

We recognise that the draft strategy is not yet a final decision. That is precisely why we are raising these concerns now. The Council's proposed timetable would see infrastructure preparation and consultation during 2027–28, followed by the introduction of tariffs during 2028–29.

There is therefore still time for the Council to listen to residents, businesses and visitors and reconsider whether charging for currently free parking is the right approach for our town centres.

The Conservatives have overtaken Reform UK in an opinion poll for the first time in more than 500 days.

Kemi Badenoch’s party gained 23 per cent of support in a poll of 3,250 people carried out by More in Common between Aug 28 and 31, beating Reform (22 per cent) into third place.
