Congratulations to Dr Niall Keenan, Consultant Cardiologist and Divisional Director for Medicine services at West Herts, who has been awarded an OBE in the King's Birthday Honours in recognition of his outstanding services to healthcare! šŸ‘

Niall has been a Consultant Cardiologist at the Trust since 2014, as well as an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London. He qualified from the University of Oxford in 2001 and completed cardiology and general medical training in London. He set up the Cardiac CT and CMR Unit at West Herts in 2016.

Throughout his career, Niall has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving care for patients, supporting colleagues and driving innovation across the NHS. This honour is a fitting recognition of his leadership, dedication and contribution to public service.

On behalf of everyone at the Trust, congratulations Niall on this well-deserved achievement!

We’ve opened our new dedicated Carers Hub at Watford General Hospital – named in honour of former patient Pat Coulson, following the incredible fundraising efforts of her sister Sue Shaw šŸ’™

The Patricia Coulson Suite will provide a dedicated space for unpaid carers to receive both emotional and practical support, helping them look after the person they are caring for, as well as themselves.

Inspired by the invaluable support she and her family received from the Caring for Carers service during Pat’s final weeks, Sue raised Ā£5,300 for the Hub in her memory, while West Herts Hospitals Charity donated Ā£750 to help furnish the Hub, and provided volunteering work to paint the new space.

Sue proudly cut the ribbon to officially open the Hub on Friday. Sue said: ā€œOpening the suite has made me the proudest sister, because the legacy of my sister will live on through this, through this room and through this hub.ā€

A huge thank you to Sue, and to West Herts Hospitals Charity, for funding the suite which will help many unpaid carers for years to come.

Yesterday, the Government published the first monthly statistics on Corridor Care, with West Herts shown to have no patients in corridor care.

We opened our doors to Channel 5 News to share how we’ve gone from close to the bottom of the A&E league tables to being consistently one of the best in the country.

Corridor care, which had been normalised for years, has been eliminated thanks to the hard work, dedication and passion of our teams. Culture change, embracing data and working closely with our partners has helped us to tackle corridor care.

We know there’s still more to do and room for improvement, but as this report shows it’s also important we recognise the progress of our teams.

Thanks go to our wonderful colleagues who featured in the story including Chief Nurse Kelly McGovern and Danielle Grant, Senior Sister, and the wider Emergency Department team.

You might be surprised by just how much our volunteers do across West Herts.

Together, our volunteers give more than 20,000 hours of their time each year supporting patients, families, carers and colleagues across our hospitals.

From a friendly face to a listening ear, they make such a positive difference to the people around them.
Volunteers’ Week isn’t enough to recognise everything they do, but it’s a chance to say thank youšŸ’™

Congrats to our Community Diagnostics Centre (CDC) team who have been honoured as our West Herts Wonders! šŸ‘

The team were recognised for their extraordinary effort, dedication and collaboration to open a new diagnostic centre at St Albans City Hospital.

The CDC officially opened on Wednesday. This is a huge achievement following many months of extraordinary effort.

Rachel Thorman, Chief Operating Officer, surprised the team at a special staff CDC opening celebration event.

Rachel said: "You have adapted, you have problem solved, you have put your patients first and foremost, you have gone above and beyond. This is a reflection of everything you’ve achieved.ā€

Our brand-new Community Diagnostic Centre has opened at St Albans City Hospital, bringing faster access to patients needing tests and diagnosis.

The new centre offers MRI, CT and ultrasound scans in a modern, purpose-built facility and will provide around 15,000 additional scans a year. These scans are important diagnostic tests that allow doctors to see detailed images inside the body.

They help diagnose a wide range of conditions, from injuries and infections to cancer and heart disease. By helping people get tested and diagnosed more quickly, the centre will reduce waiting times and support earlier treatment for a wide range of conditions.

The Community Diagnostic Centre is part of a major £100m investment in St Albans City Hospital, which will also see development of four new operating theatres and a state-of-the-art endoscopy and urology unit.

This is another important step towards providing faster diagnosis, shorter waits and a better experience for patients across west Hertfordshire.

Meet Mark Riddington, our Trauma Volunteer inspiring patients at Watford General after losing both his legs šŸ’™

As part of National Volunteers Week, we’re celebrating the incredible contribution of our volunteers by shining a spotlight on Mark, who is an example of just one of the many impactful volunteers across our hospitals.

Mark became a double amputee over the course of 20 years following two accidents.

Yet Mark’s life altering experiences have not held him back.

In fact, they inspired him to support and motivate individuals navigating the same thoughts and emotions as they come to terms with limb loss or other traumatic medical challenges.

Now, Mark volunteers at Watford General Hospital, and takes a very different approach to most volunteers.

"I speak to every patient, and I won't leave their bed until I've got a smile on their face,ā€ Mark proudly describes. ā€œThe minute they open their eyes and see a 61-year-old guy with two false legs bouncing by their bed, we have an instant connection.ā€

Mark’s story is just one example of how volunteering can transform lives, both for the people receiving support and those giving it.

A huge congratulations to six of our Healthcare Support Workers who are celebrating successfully becoming Registered Nurses after completing their nursing apprenticeship degrees! šŸ‘

Well done to Anna Skoufi, Ella Szczypiorkowska, Karolina Stawarz, Magda Brazao, Monica Asafti and Rosanna Gadaleta, who took part in a four-year nursing apprentice programme with BPP University.

Thanks to their hard work and support from both the University and Trust, they are now all Registered Nurses and celebrated their graduation at Central Hall in Westminster in May.
