Oxhey Library The local library for Oxhey Donate to Hertfordshire Libraries

It’s now easy to donate online to the library service by visiting our website.

We are often offered donations of money by users who wish to show their appreciation for the service. Those who visit the library are able to do this in person. Now you can also support the library service by donating online. You don't have to donate. Hertfordshire Libraries are a universal and free service to the community. Your decision to donate is an entirely voluntary one. We ask that you don

ate only as much as you feel comfortable with. You may want to consider either a one-off payment or more frequently.

100% of each donation goes directly to Hertfordshire Libraries and is used to maintain and enhance our services. https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/librarydonations

SOLVE IT ON SUNDAY: Chemical Elements 🧪🧲🧱🔩

With the exam season for students soon finishing, this week’s challenge is to figure out the chemical element from the one or two-letter symbol and a given clue for each!

1. Fe – One of the most common elements on earth and a widely used, magnetic metal in industry.

2. Cu – One of the oldest used metals which drastically changes colour as it rusts and can be shaped into many things.

3. He – A noble gas that is lighter than air, capable of lifting lightweight vessels and changing the pitch of a voice when inhaled.

4. Ag – Considered a precious metal and rather rare, known to be one of the least reactive elements.

5. Pb – A malleable heavy metal with a low melting point, known to be toxic.

6. K – A soft alkali metal known to have a volatile reaction with water, trace amounts can be found naturally in bananas, parsley, and dried apricots.

BOOK REVIEW: We Did Ok, Kid: A Memoir by Anthony Hopkins

I have long admired Anthony Hopkins on-screen and it’s great to see a big Hollywood actor publish such a raw and honest memoir. We follow his journey from a lonely boy in Wales struggling to find some direction - and being told repeatedly that he’d never amount to anything – to a two-time Oscar winner and certified legend.

There’s a lot of deep introspection regarding his regrets, the moments that changed the course of his life, and how his experiences and relationships have shaped him, which amount to a very satisfying book to follow. He always stands firm with who he is and we can see how that had served him well alongside how it may have held him back, personally and professionally, with many riveting stories. It’s an engaging book about coming of age from a man now well into his 80s, who still acknowledges there is always something new on the horizon, and who still wants to reassure his confused younger self that everything will work out ok.

You can reserve We Did Ok, Kid from Hertfordshire Libraries here: https://herts.spydus.co.uk/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ/OPAC/BIBENQ?SETLVL=&BRN=8980032 📖

It's also available on BorrowBox as an audiobook, read by Kenneth Branagh 🎧

The Correspondent is a novel in the form of the correspondence of Sybil Van Arnold, an elderly retired lawyer who lives her life through her letters and emails. This could make for a disjointed read, but in fact the story unfolds seamlessly as her past is revealed and she is gradually drawn back into real life. She is not a wholly likeable character, but her story is poignant and moving. Recommended.
