The Monash University Chancellery building in Melbourne is a modern architectural marvel, combining public space, office space, housing, and parking into a 10,000 square meter facility.
Constructed by Kane Constructions Pty Ltd and designed by Arm, the building is located on Monash University Clayton Campus, a site rich in 20th-century architecture. The Chancellery is distinguished by its lattice-shaped façade and an impressive clerestory ceiling that allows natural light to flood through its multiple large atria.
To ensure the building met stringent fire safety standards without compromising its open design, Coopers Fire worked with distribution partner Greene Fire to install a bespoke 72-meter FireMaster Concertina fire curtain. This curtain, with 32 facets and laser-cut capping, is designed to match the contours of the building's unique atria. The curtain deploys in the event of a fire, creating a barrier around the voids on level 3, effectively isolating it from the other levels and preventing the spread of fire and smoke.
This installation, one of the longest and most complex fire curtains ever designed, includes a timed ‘Split Drop Delay’ system for safe egress and battery backup to prevent nuisance deployment during power outages. The FireMaster Concertina curtain allows the Chancellery to maintain its aesthetic and functional goals while ensuring compliance with fire safety codes.
