Last chance to see our ‘Day In The Life of a Fusilier’ exhibition which has its last day this Saturday 20th June. It has been a real privilege interviewing members of the 1st and 5th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and gaining real insight into their lives in the army. We thank them for giving generously of their time. There is a plan to create an online version of this exhibition and the interviews will form part of the Fusilier archives at the Fusilier Museum in Bury.

To brighten your Tuesday, here is a rather splendid item from the museum collection - a scarlet coatee of an officer of the 5th Warwick Local Militia, dated between 1809 to 1814. Such militia were raised in the closing years of the Napoleonic Wars as part of the country’s defence structure and civic authority. They are often mentioned in Jane Austen novels! To read more about this item, go to the fascinating article written by museum volunteer Sophia Harberd in our June museum newsletter on the website https://fusiliermuseumwarwick.com

This week our museum was pleased to welcome Riley, from a local school, on a work placement. He experienced a variety of tasks from researching history and creating family activities to care of textiles. It is really positive to see a young person engaged with our work and history.

We had a fantastic turnout for the Voices From Normandy 1944 event on D-Day, Saturday 6th June. It was a fascinating, moving and powerful commemoration of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment’s journey from their preparation for D-Day to the landings on Sword Beach and the push through Normandy. Different narrators from 7 to 80 years old recounted the words of their families who had served in this momentous chapter of history. The experiences of Alastair Bannerman, Peter Batt, Dennis Pettit and many others will live on for future generations to remember and learn from. The event was superbly supported by members of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment WW2 re-enactors while others of their group were in France retracing the steps of the Warwickshire regiment in Normandy 1944.

Today marks the 82nd anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. Amongst the many involved in this the largest logistical undertaking in British military history were the soldiers of the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment. They landed at Sword beach near Lion Sur Mer and assumed control of the Pegasus Bridge after its liberation by the 6th airborne gilder division. At our special D-Day memorial event today, we will recall the words of those who were there in Normandy 1944 and commemorate their memory. The image is of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment landing at Sword Beach in a painting by Terence Cuneo.
