We are now working on the bed stone bearing box and Gan found a potential problem that needs attention.

Today, Chi Wei & Han were getting to grips with putting our ‘greedy boards’ into the weir. This gives the mill a little more power. They then worked on the stone dressing whilst Derek and I ran the mill. Derek then had his first go at dressing millstones towards the end of the day. The runner stone is now finished, as the final stage called ‘stitching’ was completed this afternoon. Just the bed stone stitching to do, and then bearing checks, before the stones can be reunited.

It’s been a really joyful week working with these two. There’s been so much laughter along with great progress on the N/W stones. It’s also been a busy week for flour sales so there has been a lot of juggling maintenance and production. The N/W millstones are nearly ready for the final stage of dressing before they can be reunited. The furrows were completed yesterday and are looking nice and crisp again. Next week we have a few more checks to do with bearings but we’re nearly there with the project.

How about a little history today….
Here is a hand drawn map of the mill site from 1736 compared to how it looks today.

~1728 First known documentary reference to a mill which was definitely on the present site; the miller was Stephen Lewis.

~1731-2 Stephen Lewis dies, and the Charlecote Lucy estate, who still own the mill, let it to John Osburn after spending £193-12s-5d on repairs. The repairs include mason’s, millwright’s and blacksmith’s work and two peak millstones, suggesting that the mill was far from new at that point.
(The Osborn name can be found on the existing mill)

~1736 The mill features on a beautifully drawn and coloured map of the Lucy estate. The outline of the watercourses is as now, but the road has since moved. The map suggests the mill already had two waterwheels at this point. Unfortunately we don’t know if this map is of the current Charlecote Mill, as the building date has been lost with time.

A little trick I learnt from the previous miller. When it’s very hot and sunny, block out the window to keep the millstones in shade. This helps them to run cooler. 🌊⚙️🌾
