Help with the responsible archaeological investigation near St Elphin’s and help Warrington find out what lies beneath.

How one of the largest motte and bailey castles has been discovered and is digitally revealed from its hiding place under local residents’ houses in the heart of Warrington. This project uncovers fascinating history without disturbing the soil that residents reside above and yet strengthens the connection to the community now, by looking at how we lived centuries ago. A huge thank you to the TEDxWarrington team for their support of the Warrington Castle project.

Keith’s TEDx talk was an important moment in the journey, giving us the opportunity to share a bigger idea: that heritage is not simply about understanding the past. It can help connect people to place, belonging and purpose.

Since then, the project has continued to grow, bringing together local people, researchers, archaeologists and supporters around the question of Warrington’s lost medieval castle.

We’re now preparing for the next chapter, and we have some very exciting news to share soon.

Most importantly, this remains a community project. If you’re from Warrington and interested in archaeology, local history, heritage, filmmaking, research or simply helping us uncover more of the story, we’d love you to get involved.

Together, we’ll find out what lies beneath.

Keith Myers brought his vision for Warrington Castle to the TEDxWarrington stage in 2025.

Then, his Kickstarter campaign launched in June to fund the next phase of archaeological investigation into our town's lost castle, creating more local interest in Warrington's history. And it all grew from his talk on the TEDxWarrington stage.

💡 This is what community-powered innovation looks like. One person's idea, shared boldly, becomes a project that brings people together to uncover Warrington's hidden history.

If you're interested in Keith's mission or you're passionate about archaeology, local history, or supporting ideas that change everything, give his talk a watch on the TEDx YouTube channel.

A recent part of our research took us to Battle Abbey.
960 years ago, a battle in this field changed the course of English history. It directly relates to the building of Warrington, it's charter, and later the formulation of the town.

More on that soon.

Today our Kickstarter campaign came to an end.

We didn't reach our funding target, but we're leaving this campaign feeling incredibly optimistic.

Over the last month we've brought together an amazing community who believe Warrington's hidden medieval castle deserves to be rediscovered and celebrated.

We've met archaeologists, historians, teachers, local organisations and residents who all want to help shape what comes next.

The support has honestly been overwhelming.

This campaign was never just about raising money. It was about discovering whether people cared. The answer is a resounding yes!

The next step is to build something more permanent around the project, bringing together experts, volunteers and the community to create a long-term legacy for Warrington's heritage.

If you'd like to continue following the journey, I'd love to keep in touch. 👉 https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdV3HliFsTNLFxjdkXai9s5-9GsPc76i9I72uht9NNAEqxFNw/viewform?usp=header

21 hours to go.

The Warrington Castle campaign has now reached:

£5,269 pledged
69 backers

Thank you to every person, business and organisation that has supported the project, shared the campaign or helped bring Warrington’s medieval history back into the public conversation.

The funding would enable a professionally guided archaeological investigation to test what may survive beneath the ground near St Elphin’s Park. It is an opportunity to move from years of research, surveys and public engagement towards obtaining clearer archaeological evidence.

There is now less than one day remaining.

If you have been considering supporting the project, this is the moment. Every pledge and every share helps us reach more people during these final hours.

Let’s see how far Warrington can take this.

Did you catch our Warrington Scoop interview about Warrington’s lost medieval castle?

Warrington Scoop gave us the opportunity to explain the evidence behind the project, why the castle matters, and what we hope a proper archaeological investigation could uncover. A huge thank you to Charles, Mike, and the team for giving the project such generous coverage and helping us reach more people across the town.

With less than 48 hours remaining on our Kickstarter, this is a great introduction for anyone who has been following the campaign but wants to understand more about what we are trying to achieve. Whatever happens when the campaign ends, we have already built new partnerships, connected with local archaeologists and gained council backing. The project will continue, with the next stage focused on developing the right structure, governance and expert-led team around it.

Please watch, share and support the campaign during these final two days. Are there any more backers out there?

The current fundraising campaign has helped create a significant moment for the Warrington Castle Project.

Warrington Borough Council has published a feature about our community-led work to investigate the possible remains of Warrington’s lost medieval castle.

The article explains how the project is bringing together local history, archaeology, drone surveys, terrain modelling, digital storytelling and community participation to explore what may survive beneath the ground near St Elphin’s Park.

We’re grateful to Cllr Jean Flaherty and Warrington Borough Council for supporting responsible heritage investigation, carried out with the correct permissions, professional archaeological guidance and proper protection for anything that may be discovered.

This project has grown from an intriguing local mystery into something that is bringing residents, researchers, educators, businesses and heritage specialists together. Seeing it recognised by the council feels like a real milestone, and another step towards giving Warrington’s medieval history the attention it deserves.

As we enter the final days of the current fundraiser, it is a good moment to reflect on the positive energy the project has created. There are now conversations taking place with schools, academics, archaeologists, volunteers, businesses and people who care deeply about the history of Warrington and the wider region.

Please read and share the council’s article, and help us continue building the project for the future.

We now have just 48 hours left to support the Warrington Castle Kickstarter.

So far, 64 people have backed the campaign and together we have raised £5,109. We are still some distance from the full target, and because Kickstarter is all-or-nothing, we will only receive the funding if we reach £15,000.

But whatever happens over these final two days, this campaign has already achieved a great deal. It has brought new archaeologists, historians, educators, businesses and local supporters into the project. It has taken Warrington’s lost castle into schools, onto the radio and into conversations across the town. Most importantly, it has shown that there is genuine interest in finding out what survives beneath the ground.

The project will continue. We now have stronger partnerships, more expertise around us and a much clearer route forward.

But we still have 48 hours, so we are asking one more time: could you back the campaign, increase an existing pledge, or share it with someone who might want to be part of this?

Even a small pledge adds another name to the growing community behind Warrington Castle.

Another chance to listen back to the Warrington Castle interview on BBC Radio Merseyside.

We talked about the story behind the project, what we are trying to find out, and why the next phase of archaeology at St Elphin’s Park could be so important for understanding Warrington’s medieval past.

The Kickstarter is still live, with around 67 hours left. It is an all-or-nothing campaign, so we still need a big final push.

But whatever happens, this campaign has already shown that people care about Warrington’s history and want to see the project move forward.
