Yesterday, our Fisheries Enforcement Officers encountered an angler fishing on the River Dee during the coarse fish close season.

The close season runs from 15th March to 15th June inclusive on rivers, streams and drains, helping to protect fish while they spawn and recover.

Most anglers respect the regulations and play their part in protecting our fisheries. However, enforcement patrols continue throughout the close season to ensure those who choose not to comply are dealt with appropriately.

If you suspect someone is fishing illegally, or wish to report any other fisheries related incident, please contact our 24-hour incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.

🚨A recent joint patrol at a local fishery highlights the importance of joint working🚨

Officers attended ‘Secret Lake’ in Levenshulme alongside Greater Manchester Police in response to intelligence regarding illegal fishing. Our officers identified several Fisheries offences with appropriate enforcement action taken.

During a final check, an individual was identified as wanted following several unsuccessful attempts to locate them. They were arrested at the scene by Greater Manchester Police and have since been charged with a number of serious offences including domestic abuse.

This incident highlights how the work we do to protect our waters can also help address other types of crime in the community.

If you suspect illegal fishing, you can report it by calling 0800 80 70 60 or through the online form https://www.gov.uk/report-illegal-fishing-in-england

We’re thrilled to share with you all the latest fishery improvement funding allocations 🎣

Funded entirely through rod licence income, these investments will support a range of projects aimed at improving fish habitats, protecting fish stocks and enhancing angling opportunities for everyone.

Your contributions from buying a rod licence make a real difference, helping to strengthen sustainable fisheries and support the environments and communities that depend on them.

A big thank you to everyone who plays a part in this 🙌

Stay tuned for more updates as these projects get underway!

An illegal 8 hole fish trap has been seized by our Fisheries Enforcement Officers on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Abram.

Several fish were found trapped inside and were safely returned to the canal.

Illegal traps like this can cause serious harm to fish and other wildlife and are an offence under the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975. Our team will continue carrying out patrols across the area targeting illegal fishing activity and protecting fish stocks.

If you witness illegal fishing or suspicious activity, please report it to the Environment Agency Incident Hotline on 0800 80 70 60 🎣

A fantastic example of how our Fisheries Improvement Programme funding can make a real difference at Horrobin Pond, run by Ramsey Angling Club 👏🏼

The first two pictures are of the pond before, apologies they aren’t the best as they’ve been pulled from videos I took last year while we were carrying out a netting survey there, but the transformation is brilliant to see.

The banks have been levelled and stabilised, new angling platforms installed, and new paths created, massively improving access and safety for all anglers 🎣

All funded by our rod licence income 🙌🏼

🚨 FACT FRIDAY 🚨

🐟 Moving Fish for Stocking or Introduction? Let’s Talk Supplier Permits 🐟

If you’re supplying live fish for introduction into a fishery, moving fish between sites, or you’re a club or fishery collecting fish from a supplier to stock your water, you’ll need a Live Fish Supplier Permit.

When is a Supplier Permit required?

You must hold one if you:

✅ Supply fish for introduction into a fishery

✅ Move fish between fisheries or sites

✅ Collect fish from a supplier with the intention of introducing them to your water

Your responsibilities as a Supplier Permit holder:

✅ The receiving water has a valid Live Fish Movements Site Permit

✅ The species being introduced are specifically covered by that site permit

✅ Fish have a valid health check (where required), and a copy is sent to the Environment Agency Fish Movements team before supply

✅ At least two working days’ notice is given for certain higher‑risk fish introductions

Why this matters…

These checks are essential to protect fish health and to reduce the risk of spreading disease and parasites between fisheries.

A practical example - When we crop waters during netting surveys and relocate fish into other fisheries, we operate under a Tier 2 Supplier Permit, allowing us to carry out this work safely and in line with regulations.

Sharing a great post from our colleagues Environment Agency - Great Ouse and Fenland Fisheries Team 👏🏼

It’s a really good explanation of how rogue fish tank and garden pond introductions can impact fish stocks.. especially true crucians.

It only takes a handful of fish being introduced to alter genetics, spread disease or parasites, and impact existing populations that have taken years to protect and manage.

We’ve been back out again today on Pennington Brook, this time with support from our colleagues on the electrofishing team 🎣

With today’s efforts included, we estimate around 1,600lb of bream have now been rescued from the brook and relocated back into Pennington Flash.

We’re confident we’ve managed to recover the majority of the shoal, although inevitably a few may have slipped through the net… no pun intended.

A huge shoutout to all of the team. 👏🏼 This was no small task, especially with the difficult access, but as always everyone has given 110% across yesterday and today to help prevent what could easily have become a major fish kill.

Following the incident, we’ll also be exploring potential mitigation options to help reduce the chances of this happening again in future.

And just as a reminder… everything we do as a team, including incident responses like this is funded directly through rod licence income 🎣

🚨 Fish Rescue Underway on Pennington Brook 🚨

Our Fisheries Team are currently carrying out a fish rescue operation on Pennington Brook after a large shoal of bream moved downstream from Pennington Flash and were washed over the weir at St Helens Road.

So far, we estimate around 700lb of bream have been safely rescued and relocated back into Pennington Flash.

Operations will continue throughout today and into tomorrow, with officers closely monitoring the situation and working to recover as many fish as possible.

We’ll try and keep you all as updated as possible!
