This doesn’t look like a maths lesson… and that’s exactly the point 🐝
This simple bee-themed invitation to play is packed with early mathematical opportunities, all through hands-on exploration.
Children can:
🐝 Roll the dice and match the quantity to the correct numeral on the bees
🐝 Count out the matching number of pom-poms
🐝 Compare quantities and talk about more and less
🐝 Look for matching numbers on two dice
🐝 Begin to recognise and order numerals
One particularly important skill children are developing here is subitising.
Subitising is the ability to recognise a small quantity without needing to count each item individually. For example, seeing 4 dots on a dice and instantly knowing it’s 4.
It might seem like a small skill, but it’s actually a key building block for number sense and helps children develop confidence with calculation as they grow.
The best part? Most children simply think they’re playing a game 🐝💛
At The Secret Garden, we love creating playful invitations to learn where children can explore concepts naturally, at their own pace and in a way that feels meaningful to them 🌿✨
Would your little one roll the dice or head straight for the pom-poms?
