DRAGOONS | The Legacy Lives On

One Family's Regimental Story from Normandy to the Present Day

Military service often runs in , particularly so in regiments. This is just one example from The Royal Dragoon Guards, a regiment formed in 1992 through the amalgamation of The 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards.

For Shaun, now in his early eighties, the Regiment has been part of his family's story for more than 200 years.

His family's connection begins in 1825, when his maternal great-great-grandfather, Henry, purchased a commission in The 6th Inniskilling Dragoons. More than a century later, that tradition continued through both The 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, creating a connection that would span .

Shaun's father, Pat, was commissioned into the 4th/7th shortly before the Second World War before transferring to the Skins after Dunkirk. Shortly after the Regiment arrived in , he was killed by German shellfire at Jerusalem crossroads near Bayeux, several months before Shaun was born.

Many years later, Shaun found himself in conversation with a forceful elderly gentleman who asked his name and whether he was related to Pat. The man turned out to be Colonel Ben Tottenham, a former Skins officer. Colonel Tottenham went on to describe how he and another officer had recovered Pat's body and arranged for his burial. It was an extraordinary encounter that brought together two men connected by events more than half a century earlier.

The family's military tradition continued through Shaun's uncle Tony, who served with the Skins during the Second World War, and his younger half-brother David, who served in the Potential Officers Troop at Catterick before being commissioned into the 4th/7th. The family's service reaches back even further, with another ancestor serving as veterinary officer to The 5th Dragoon Guards at Waterloo in 1815. Tony later served as Adjutant of the Skins and was Mentioned in Despatches for his service in Normandy following D-Day.

Shaun himself went on to serve with the 4th/7th between 1964 and 1967, serving in BAOR (West Germany), Aden, South Arabia and Northern Ireland, as well as undertaking a brief attachment to the Trucial Oman Scouts.

Perhaps the most remarkable coincidence came during Shaun's service. While serving in the early 1960s, a soldier from Cumbria told him that his wife was expecting a child and that, if it was a boy, he might name him Shaun. More than 60 years later, a man bearing exactly the same first name and surname was part of a recent Royal Dragoon Guards Veterans Squadron activity.

Coincidence? Perhaps. But it is another reminder of how often have a habit of resurfacing across the .

Stories such as Shaun's remind us that the Regimental Family extends far beyond service.

Before the beaches, there was sacrifice. Before the victory, there was preparation.

As we approach the anniversary of D-Day, we reflect on a shared history of courage, sacrifice and duty.

The Royal Dragoon Guards carries forward the proud heritage of its antecedent regiments, the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards and the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards. During the Second World War, men from both regiments formed the nucleus of the newly raised 22nd Dragoons, a wartime Regiment whose story reflects the shared traditions and enduring bonds that continue to define our Regimental today.

For the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards, the road to D-Day passed through Studland Bay in Dorset. There, during Exercise SMASH ONE in April 1944, crews trained with the revolutionary Duplex Drive swimming tanks that would spearhead the Normandy landings. Six members of the Regiment lost their lives during that live-fire rehearsal. Following the tragedy of Exercise SMASH ONE, the Regiment took part in Exercise FABIUS, the final full-scale rehearsal for D-Day, on 4 May 1944, before receiving its DD Sherman tanks on 5 May 1944 in preparation for the invasion. Their sacrifice, and the courage displayed by those crews, formed part of the preparation that helped make the D-Day landings possible.

Among those who took part in the D-Day landings was 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards veteran Cecil Newton. Landing on Gold Beach with his comrades, his story reflects the courage, resilience and sacrifice of a remarkable generation. This year, one year after his passing, members of the Regimental Family will accompany Cecil on his final journey as his ashes are scattered, honouring one of our own. In the days ahead, we will share more of Cecil's story.

In remembering members of the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, the 22nd Dragoons, and all those who served on D-Day, we honour not only our history, but the values of courage, resilience and comradeship that continue to unite The Royal Dragoon Guards today.

DRAGOONS | Ex DIAMONDBACK

B Squadron have deployed to the National Training Centre, California for Ex DIAMONDBACK, training alongside the US Army in one of the toughest armoured training areas in the world.

Before the exercise phase, our soldiers are spending time acclimatising to the desert heat, altitude, and terrain; building the fitness and resilience needed to operate safely in this arduous environment.

We’re also working closely with our attached arms — 21st Signals Regiment (Electronic Warfare), 5th Regiment Royal Artillery, and 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery — whose expertise in communications, surveillance and fires enhance the lethality of the Squadron.

Ex DIAMONDBACK is about readiness, developing partnerships and learning how to operate as a modern, multi‑domain team. These early days of physical training, lessons and integration set the foundations for the demanding exercise, and live firing phases ahead.

Proud to represent our Regiment, the UK, and to train shoulder‑to‑shoulder with our American partners.

DRAGOONS | Iraq – 15 Years On

Fifteen years on, we reflect on the service of all those from the Royal Dragoon Guards and across the Armed Forces who deployed on operations in Iraq.

Operation TELIC marked a significant chapter in the Regiment’s recent history. Dragoons served with professionalism, determination and resilience in difficult and demanding circumstances, carrying out their duty with distinction.

We remember those across the Armed Forces who lost their lives, those who were injured, and the lasting impact operational service had on serving personnel, veterans and families alike.

For many within the Regimental Family, Iraq remains a defining period of service, marked by strong friendships, shared hardship and unwavering comradeship.

RDG Operational TELIC Deployments:
• TELIC 5
• TELIC 11

We remember their service with pride and respect.

DRAGOONS | Regimental Roll of Honour

In September 2025, The Royal Dragoon Guards received a new Sovereign’s Standard from His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, marking a significant chapter in the Regiment’s long and distinguished history.

To commemorate this historic occasion, the Regiment recently commissioned a unique Roll of Honour recognising all those who took part in the Presentation of the new Sovereign’s Standard on 12 September 2025, including those serving away from the Regiment.

Created by military artist Mrs BEM, the hand-painted Roll of Honour captures the names of every member of the Regiment who stood on parade.

Steeped in and , the piece represents far more than a record of names. It preserves a defining moment in the Regiment’s history, one which will endure for generations to come.

Through exceptional craftsmanship and remarkable attention to detail, Clare has created a truly outstanding piece of military art, reflecting the pride, professionalism and spirit of the Regiment with great distinction.

This Roll of Honour will stand for generations as a lasting tribute to service, heritage and Regimental identity.

DRAGOONS | Charity Motorbike Ride 👏🏍

200 miles. 4 riders. £1,011 raised.

Four members of the Royal Dragoon Guards took on a motorbike ride in support of Combat Stress.

Route: Warminster – Swindon – Bristol – Bath – Warminster

Catching up with the team today, the sun is out, but on ride day, the conditions were far less kind. Wet weather made it a tougher challenge, with plenty of banter along the way about who had the best bike!

Through our Programme, we are also exploring Combat Stress’ learning resources to better educate ourselves and our community, strengthening understanding and support around veterans’ mental health.

A huge thank you to everyone who sponsored and supported.

And this is just the start, the riders are already planning their next challenge in support of the Royal Dragoon Guards Charity.👏🏍

DRAGOONS | Moral Component

Members of B Squadron recently visited our Regimental Museum in York as part of their moral component training, taking time to connect with the history that shapes who we are today.

From the Museum to the historic Pavement Church, where our former Sovereign’s Standard was recently laid up. The visit offered a powerful reminder of the Regiment’s enduring legacy. These are not just places; they are touchstones of service, sacrifice and identity.

Understanding our past is central to building the moral component of fighting power. It strengthens pride, reinforces standards, and connects every soldier to something greater than themselves.
