☀️ With the warm weather here, more people are enjoying the River Thames and local waterways around Wallingford.

The local Thames Valley Police PCSO team has shared the following advice to help everyone stay safe around open water this summer.

Even on hot days, rivers can be much colder than they appear, and cold water shock can happen suddenly.

💧 Enter the water slowly
⚠️ Be aware of changing depths and hidden hazards
🚫 Never jump into water from height
✅ Stay within your limits
👥 Keep an eye on friends and family

There have sadly been a number of water-related deaths across the UK in recent weeks, with cold water shock identified as a contributing factor in some cases.

📞 If someone gets into difficulty in the water, call 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service, who are specially trained for water rescues.

Let's all enjoy the sunshine safely and look out for one another.

🦋 Take part in this year’s Big Butterfly Count and help build a picture of how our local wildlife is doing. 🦋

Run by Butterfly Conservation, the Big Butterfly Count is a UK-wide citizen science project taking place from 17 July to 9 August 2026. All it takes is 15 minutes in a sunny outdoor spot to count and record the butterflies and moths you see.

Whether it’s in your garden, one of Wallingford’s green spaces, or out along the Thames Path, every count helps scientists better understand the health of the environment and changing butterfly populations.

You can find identification guides, download the free app, and learn how to take part here: https://bigbutterflycount.butterfly-conservation.org/

Wallingford Town Council is disappointed that planning permission has now been granted for the proposed White Cross Farm Quarry in Cholsey following the outcome of the appeal by London Rock Supplies Ltd.

Both Wallingford Town Council and Cholsey Parish Council objected to the proposals, alongside Oxfordshire County Council, which originally refused the application. During the Planning Inquiry, the Wallingford Neighbourhood Planning Steering Group, together with representatives from Cholsey Parish Council, worked extensively to research, prepare and present evidence challenging the proposals and raising concerns about the impact on the landscape, the River Thames corridor, the Thames Path, traffic, noise and the wider local environment.

The Inspector acknowledged concerns raised by the local councils and residents regarding the impact of the development, however, the appeal decision concluded that these impacts could be managed through a series of planning conditions and mitigation measures.

Conditions include:
• No working on Sundays or Bank Holidays
• Limits on HGV movements
• White noise reversing alarms to reduce disturbance
• Wheel-cleaning facilities to prevent mud on roads
• Screening bunds, willow planting and riverbank buffer zones

Despite the objections raised, the Planning Inspector concluded that the perceived need for sand and gravel extraction within Oxfordshire outweighed the concerns identified, and the appeal has therefore been allowed.

The approved scheme will allow the extraction of approximately 550,000 tonnes of sand and gravel over a five-year period, followed by a further year of restoration works.

Wallingford has always had strong links to the Armed Forces. Both the Army and the RAF hold the Freedom of the Town, RAF Benson is right on our doorstep, and every year our community turns out in huge numbers to remember those who served.

But the reality is that our local Royal British Legion branch is in urgent need of more support from local people.

The Poppy Appeal doesn’t just happen on its own. It relies on volunteers giving a little of their time to help raise funds that provide lifelong support to serving personnel, veterans and their families.

If we are proud of our military connections as a town, we should also be prepared to support the people carrying that work forward locally.

Whether you can spare a few hours collecting, help organise locally, or simply want to get involved, now is the time to step forward and support Wallingford’s Poppy Appeal.

You can find out more and sign up online at: http://rbl.org.uk/pavol

Information leaflets about the Royal British Legion and volunteering for the Poppy Appeal are also available from the Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall, or from the Town Council offices in Castle Street.

Please consider volunteering and helping keep this important tradition alive in our town.

On Sunday 17 May, Wallingford’s traditional Mayor’s Sunday parade will take place to mark the beginning of the new Mayoral Year.

The parade will form up at Goldsmiths Lane Car Park before proceeding through the town to St Martin’s Street, where the Mayor of Wallingford will take the salute at approximately 12.05pm. The civic procession will then continue to St Mary’s Church for the traditional service, followed by a civic reception at the Town Hall for invited guests.

Please note that roads around the Market Place will be closed to traffic from approximately 11.15am until 12.45pm to allow the parade to take place safely.

We thank residents and visitors for their patience during the temporary closures and warmly invite the community to come along and watch this long-standing Wallingford tradition.
