Defibrillators can save lives, but only if they’re working.

This Check Your Defib Week (15-21 June) we’re encouraging all defib Guardians to help save more lives by ensuring their device is rescue-ready and accurately listed on The Circuit.

Our Patient Transport Service Volunteers use their own vehicles to take patients to vital medical appointments across Yorkshire – and sometimes further afield.

Collectively, our PTS Volunteers make around 3,500 patient journeys each month.

If you’d like to join our team and help make someone’s difficult day a little easier.

A cardiac arrest can happen anywhere at any time.

If you witness one, you must call 999 and start CPR straight away.

Perform CPR by placing your hands on the centre of the person’s chest and interlocking your fingers.

Use your body weight to push down 5 to 6cm on their chest.

Repeat this at a rate of 2 per second until the person regains consciousness or an ambulance arrives.

Our Restart a Heart Day initiative won the Kate Granger Outstanding Contribution Award at the Yorkshire Choice Awards!

Since 2014, Restart a Heart Day has delivered lifesaving CPR training to more than 311,000 young people across Yorkshire secondary schools, giving them with the skills and confidence to save a life through CPR and the use of a defibrillator. Since it began, it's helped increase Yorkshire’s bystander CPR rates by 35%, saving countless lives.

Well done to the team and to the hundreds of staff and volunteers who give up their own time to teach life-saving CPR every year.

Vicki is a dedicated Community First Responder who also helps as a Community Engagement Volunteer.

She said: “As a teacher, I’m keen to educate people on how to perform CPR and how to use a defibrillator. In every session, I discuss what happens when you call 999, how to identify whether a patient needs CPR, how to perform CPR and how to access/use a defibrillator. I also answer any questions that the public have, and I'm often told that the session has alleviated their worries around delivering CPR, especially to people who they do not know.”

Phil has been a valued member of the Critical Friends Network since its inception and has helped to shape the group and strengthen the patient voice within the Trust.

Over the years, he has contributed to a wide range of projects aimed at improving patient safety and experience. One of the earliest changes he supported was better communication for Patient Transport Service users. More recently, he has been involved in discussions around booking codes and changes to patient transport eligibility.

Reflecting on his involvement, Phil said: “There is no 'I' in team. The Critical Friends Network and volunteering are all about working together with the Trust to make a real difference to patients.”
