Appletree Community Garden

Appletree Community Garden A place to learn, meet, grow and dig deep. Everyone is welcome - learn some new growing skills or share what you know!

Appletree Community Garden is a charitable project run by the registered charity Spectrum People. Appletree Allotment & Community Garden welcomes everyone who is interested in fresh air, home grown produce, healthy lifestyle and meeting like-minded people. An allotment can produce enough food to supplement a family's weekly shop, with fresh fruit and vegetables being available most of the year. Ev

eryone who gives some of their time can share in the produce grown on site – because it’s fresh it also tastes better! There are lots of health and wellbeing benefits too! Just 30 minutes of gardening on an allotment can burn around 150 calories, the same as doing low impact aerobics. You can also meet new friends as there is great camaraderie with other site users and, no matter what your strength, skills or abilities there are activities to suit everyone. (We have raised beds on hard standing for anyone who may be less mobile)

If you want any more information, please get in touch – we would be happy to hear from you!

AppleTree Women’s Group kicks off our All Things Gardening course 🌱

Session one down and we’re already loving it!

What we got up to today:
- Sowing for Wakefield House: We planted seeds + veg that’ll go back to Wakefield House
- Sow & grow: Everyone potted up seeds o take home and care for
- Grow know-how: We learned how to find out when plants should be sown and what they need to thrive
- Course goals: We all got a chance to share what we want to get out of the course this term.

Coming up in the next few sessions: we’ll be building raised beds + designing a mud kitchen in future sessions.

Big thanks to Lou Groundwork for leading today’s session and getting us started!

It’s been hot and busy around the garden this week! Matt and Darren have been planting out sweetcorn and sweet peas and using permaculture ethics to capture rainwater in a new location.

There’s also been an increase in wildlife: lots of bees 🐝 some butterflies 🦋 , and a pair of nesting mallards 🦆 too!

This in turn is a great sign for the biodiversity in the garden and we welcome it with open arms!

To find out more visit us at Appletree every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10am-4pm or Saturday 11am-3pm

We’ve been tidying up Navigation Walk today after the early morning storm! We took care of the litter and the weeds. The swans, geese and Dolly have made sure everything has been safely handled.

Session 7: Appletree Women’s Group and Cycle North UK 🚲

Week 7 and our crew is rolling!

Today the Appletree Women’s Group met up again with Andrea and Joy from Cycle North for another round of learn-to-cycle sessions. The energy was different this week - more “I’ve got this” and less “are my feet even supposed to go there?”

Andrea broke down cornering and braking with her usual calm, no-pressure vibe, and we spent some time looking through road safety photos with her to get ready for riding out on the road. Joy worked one-on-one with a few of us who were still working on balance.

What we love about these sessions is there’s zero judgment. If you need to walk your bike for a bit, you walk it. If you want to try again, they’re right there with you.

We’re starting to feel like actual cyclists now. Next session: putting that road prep into practice and doing basic bike checks. Who knew learning to ride as adults could feel this freeing?

Thanks Andrea and Joy for making it feel safe, fun, and doable. See you all next time.
