FIRE STATION CLOSURE CONSULTATION CLOSES 5PM TODAY

Verwood & Three Legged Cross Town Council's response from the Mayor is as follows;
Verwood & Three Legged Cross Town Council is deeply concerned about the proposals to close 4 fire stations across Dorset. Of particular concern to our communities is the proposed closure of Cranborne Fire station.
Ahead of the consultation closing, we want to add our objection to these proposals which are opposed by a significant number of local residents, our local MP and Councillors. Whilst appreciating the financial pressure that the wider service is under, these closures disproportionately affect rural and semi-rural areas. The hollowing out of rural services must stop.
However, it is the knock on impact of Verwood’s fire station that is the biggest concern for Verwood Town Council and many of our residents. The closure of Cranborne fire station will undoubtably require our local station, and the brilliant firefighters that serve here, to cover an even wider area. Serving an ever increasingly large area, or being required to plug gaps across Dorset due to closures invariably means spending less time in Verwood and the area that this station was designed to cover.
Verwood and Three Legged Cross is surrounded by forest and heathland, some of it is internationally important. Many homes are located very close to these areas. In recent years there has been a number of significant fires in these areas and it seems clear that this is an upward trend, here in Verwood and across Dorset. I gather that the Service has had its busiest summer ever last year. This is not the time to be closing fire stations.
Verwood Town Council objects to these proposals due to the impact on Verwood and the reduced ability that spreading the crews at Verwood too thinly. We want to put on thanks our deep admiration for the work of our local firefighters and the work more generally of the Fire and Rescue service. The team have always been there when Verwood and Three Legged Cross has needed them and by opposing these plans, we wish to see this continue.
We have identified an administrative error affecting paper copies of the consultation questionnaire that were made available at the public events. A question was missing from those paper copies.
