A Heartfelt Message to NABD Members and Supporters

The past few months have tested the NABD in ways we never expected. Many of you will have noticed delays in replies and moderation, and I want to speak to you openly about why this has happened, and why your patience means more to us now than ever.

Last year, our website, shop, and membership system began to fail in ways we simply couldn’t patch up anymore. What started as small glitches quickly grew into serious technical problems, and a forensic review confirmed what we feared: the systems we relied on were no longer fit for purpose.

We rolled up our sleeves and got to work. A professional IT company rebuilt the entire website from the ground up, while we created all-new content and researched a safer, more modern membership system.

The new website is now live, and the new membership portal is already proving easier, clearer, and far more welcoming for new and existing members alike.

But behind the scenes, the truth is this: the old system left us with a backlog stretching back to July 2025. We are now painstakingly transferring every member, one by one, to ensure accuracy and security. It’s slow, but it’s necessary, and it’s being done with care.

Then came another blow. After more than 20 years of support, our landlord has had no choice but to sell the building that houses our HQ. The place that has been the heart of the NABD for two decades is now under threat, and this has added a heavy emotional and practical weight to everything we’re already dealing with.

All of this has happened while several committee members, people who have given years of their lives to this charity, are facing serious health issues, surgeries, and long periods of treatment. And yet, even from hospital beds and recovery rooms, they are still doing what they can.

I want to remind everyone that we are all unpaid volunteers. We give every spare hour we have because we believe in what the NABD stands for: independence, dignity, and the freedom to ride.

So please know this: nobody is being ignored, and nobody is being forgotten. We are simply stretched to our limits while trying to protect the very foundations of the organisation.

To help reduce delays in the NABD Facebook Group, Andy Arnott has kindly stepped in to support moderation.

If you’re waiting for information, there’s a good chance it’s already on the new website, checking there first can help us keep moving forward.

Thank you for your patience, your understanding, and your belief in what we do. Your support is the reason the NABD has survived every challenge thrown at it for 35 years, and it’s the reason we’ll get through this one too.

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐍𝐀𝐁𝐃 𝐖𝐞𝐛𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞, 𝐎𝐧𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐍𝐨𝐰! 😊

I am very pleased to announce that the new NABD website is now live and fully operational.

While the web address remains unchanged, http://nabd.org.uk almost everything else has been comprehensively upgraded.
Thanks to the technical expertise of the team at Vector Web Services of Shropshire https://vector-web-services.co.uk/ we now have a modern, significantly improved and dynamic website, which should serve the NABD well for many years to come.

The new site is fully compliant with current data protection requirements, incorporates enhanced security features, and makes use of adaptive technologies. It works equally well on mobile phones, tablets and desktop PCs, and is noticeably faster and more responsive than our previous website.

Over the past six months, a phenomenal amount of work has gone into populating the new site with informative articles and updated content, and we are very pleased with the results achieved so far.

Although a small number of sections are still being completed (including Affiliations, Fundraising and the Online Shop), the new website already contains far more information than ever before and thanks to some thoughtful design choices, it also feels significantly less cluttered and is much easier to navigate.

The improved navigation and greatly expanded FAQ sections should also help reduce the need for us to repeatedly reply to the same common queries.

Alongside the new website, we have introduced a completely new online membership system. This replaces the cumbersome old system, which had become increasingly problematic and had caused a number of difficulties and complaints over the past year or so. The new system is much simpler, more reliable, and better suited to our needs. A full explanation can be found here:
https://nabd.org.uk/the-new-nabd-online-membership-portal/

When you have a moment, I encourage you to explore the new site and see what you think. As a dynamic website, it will always be a work in progress, but we hope you will agree that it already represents a significant improvement and a valuable resource for motorcyclists with disabilities.

We always welcome feedback from members and supporters. If you notice anything that needs attention, or if you experience any issues when using the site on your device, please let us know by emailing [email protected] and providing as much detail as possible.

𝐌𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐨𝐝 (𝐂𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐦𝐮𝐫𝐟) 𝟏𝟕/𝟎𝟔/𝟏𝟗𝟔𝟎 – 𝟏𝟐/𝟎𝟐/𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔

Despite my many years as a writer, I struggle to find the words to express the profound feelings of sadness and despondency that overwhelmed my wife Mandy and I on hearing of the sudden death of our friend Mike Hood on the 12th of February 2026.

We were celebrating our wedding anniversary in Egypt when we received a call from Pete Walker of East Yorkshire MAG informing us of Mike’s sudden death earlier that day. The news initially left us too shocked and choked up to speak!

I know Pete hated breaking such tragic news to us during our holiday, but he also knew how dearly we loved Mike and how devastating it would have been for us to learn of his sudden death via the soulless morass of social media.

Later, as the sun set over the Red Sea, we raised our mocktails to him as ‘Hurry On Sundown’ by his beloved Hawkwind played in the background.

Mike was ubiquitously known and loved by so many people on the UK motorcycle rally scene as “Captain Smurf” though to us he was simply “The Cap’n”. He was a truly gentle and kind-hearted man whose diminutive physical stature belied his immense character and the enormous regard in which he was held by thousands of bikers throughout the UK.

The Cap’n was instantly recognisable at rallies and events in his weather-beaten leather fedora, badge covered cut-off, his ever-present wry smile and the ubiquitous long lensed camera slung around his neck.

Without doubt he was most widely known for his skill as a photographer. His innate ability to record moments of unmitigated joy and magnificent spontaneous character portraits, while remaining quietly invisible to the subject, allowed him to capture thousands of superb, extemporaneous and intimate, snapshots of the biker lifestyle over more than three decades.

For many people, being the subject of a photo by Captain Smurf was considered a badge of honour in itself!

As a merchant seaman The Cap’n had seen a great deal more of the world than most of us ever will. Whether sailing huge freight ships through the Suez Canal or skippering somewhat smaller, though no less impressive scientific survey ships through the most unpredictable and dangerous seas on the planet, he had witnessed at first-hand the ocean’s greatest wonders and its most terrifying power. The former he happily shared with us less fortunate souls through his excellent wildlife photography, and the latter he would rarely discuss willingly, no matter how much Pussers Rum I plied him with!

The Cap’n and I became friends some 35-years ago, initially hitting-it-off due to a shared love of motorcycling, a common belief in the aims of the National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD) and The Motorcycle Action Group (MAG), together with a mutual appreciation of good quality rum (for which, we were both blessed with prodigious capacity).

I introduced Mandy to the Cap’n about ten years ago and they immediately became firm friends, instantly revelling in their reciprocal ‘joie de vivre’ every time they met.

On their first meeting Mandy had asked why, when she saw so many photos taken by The Cap’n, she never saw any photos of The Cap’n himself. From then on, it became a tradition that he would hand over his camera every time they met at an event so she could take a photo of him.

He was also an inveterate fan of my Smacked Arse Comedy Shows, which in turn led to many of the stand-up comedians featured in those shows over the past 30-years being blessed with excellent top-quality, live action publicity photographs taken by The Cap’n. I know many of them, will be deeply saddened to hear of his untimely death at just 65 years-of-age.

The motorcycle rally scene in the UK has been blessed with many iconic characters over the past fifty years, but I can think of very few who have been held in such fond regard by so many people as Cap’n Smurf. He is certainly one of the nicest and finest human beings it has ever been my privilege to know, and I feel truly blessed to have enjoyed his friendship.

The thought of never seeing The Cap’n again is simply too upsetting to contemplate at present, and I am struggling greatly with the realisation that our glorious conversations have now come to an end.

I don’t doubt that his absence will be sorely felt by many at this year’s most iconic rallies.

The UK bike scene cannot help but be tangibly diminished for his absence and, for many of us, the world will be a less joyous place for the lack of his ever-ready smile and his radiant golden soul.

I knew The Cap’n had been battling with severe chest problems since early 2025. His growing frustration with how this was interfering with his attendance at events had been evident in our most recent conversations. I understand from his sisters that the cause of his death was a heart attack brought on by ischemic heart disease.

The Cap’n is survived by his mother, two sisters and a number of nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, who were sources of great joy to him. My heart and my condolences go out to each and every one of them for their loss.

RIP Cap’n, you will always hold a place of love and honour in my heart.

R.I.P. Mr Creature

It was with the greatest sadness that I learned of the death of my dear old friend and NABD Legend, Mr Creature (aka Stephen Osborn).

‘Mr C’ was a greatly loved stalwart supporter of the National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD) for more than 25-years.

He was a larger-than-life character, instantly recognisable with his tatty old pirate hat and his ‘Glamorous Assistant’ Polly the pirate’s parrot on his shoulder.

He was probably best known for his Mr Creatures Dejavu Roadshow, and its spectacular lightshow, which evolved over the years to outdo anything the rally scene had ever experienced before.

I first teamed up with Mr C when he became my DJ and co-host in the Adult Marquee at the You’ve Been Nabbed Rally (a job he relished for more than 20-years).

It proved to be such an effective and joyous collaboration that we repeated it at all of the NABD national events, including the Autumn Nabd’ness Rally and the Nabdonia Rally for many years.

We also teamed up for non-NABD events, including, The Farmyard Party at Helmsley in Yorkshire, where Mr C was the resident DJ in my Rider’s Rights marquee for 15-years, until his declining health forced his retirement in 2020.

Away from the public gaze, Mr C had been a steadfast fundraiser for the NABD, with collection pots on his disco kit, running raffles, and even the extremely laborious online selling of batches of old bike magazines that people used to donate to him, quietly raising hundreds of pounds annually for the NABD over many years.

When, with the tireless cooperation of his lovely family, he began to organise his own, ‘Any Spare Change’ Rally, those hundreds of pounds became thousands of pounds per year!

I think the Any Spare Change Rally ran for six years, though it may have been seven. I do know that it raised well over £20,000 for the NABD and Mr C and his family took a great deal of well-earned pride in that fact.

Over recent years, his health, both physical and mental, had steadily deteriorated and he had spent some time in residential care. My most recent conversations with him had been quite heartrending, as his state of confusion and the torment in his mind were starkly evident.

I cannot deny that the sadness I felt on receiving the news of his death was somewhat assuaged by the fact that he is now beyond the reach of the pain and torment that this veil of tears had so unjustly heaped upon him.

These last few years must have been a hellish time for his lovely long-suffering wife Lynne and the rest of the family. My heart goes out to them all, as do my fondest regards!

Mr Creature has more than earned his place in the NABD Hall of Fame, he will long be remembered as an NABD Hero, and I know that would have pleased him greatly.

Personally, I will always remember Mr C as the big, silly, happy, somewhat sweaty, caring, magnanimous and gallant soul who I came to know and love due to our shared belief in the NABD.

R.I.P Mr Creature, you silly smelly old crumpet, you take with you more love and respect than you could possibly carry!

𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐀𝐁𝐃 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐒𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐲:

On Monday 15th of September 2025, Tracey Tynan notified the National Committee of the National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD), via email, of her resignation from the post of Membership Secretary of the NABD.

This resignation was accepted by the NABD National Committee and Trustees at its next scheduled meeting on Tuesday 14th October 2025, in accordance with the resignation policy of the NABD.

On behalf of the Trustees and other members of the National Committee, I commend Tracey Tynan for her contribution, over the past 3-years, toward the multifarious daily administration of what can only be described as a preposterously Kafkaesque and absurdly labyrinthine online NABD membership system.

On Sunday 3rd of August 2025, Simon Freedman notified the National Committee of the National Association for Bikers with a Disability (NABD), via email, of his resignation from the post of Webmaster & Trustee of the NABD, “effective immediately”.
This resignation came as an unexpected shock to his fellow Trustees and colleagues on the National Committee.

Rick Hulse, Chairman of the NABD, responded to Simon Freedman’s notice of resignation, inviting him to reconsider his decision and offering to help find solutions to reduce the workload attached to the Webmaster post.

Having received no response from Simon prior to the next scheduled meeting of the National Committee on Wednesday 6th August 2025, and in accordance with the resignation policy of the NABD, it was with regret that the National Committee accepted Simon Freedman’s resignation from the post of Webmaster and as a Trustee.

Simon Freedman has worked diligently on behalf of the NABD in rebuilding, expanding, maintaining and refining the online amenities since joining the National Committee as Webmaster in March 2016.

On behalf of the Trustees and other members of the National Committee, I commend Simon Freedman for his dedication to, and furtherance of, the aims of the NABD and I proffer our gratitude and appreciation for his indefatigable work in the Sisyphean and often thankless role of NABD Webmaster and I offer our best regards to Simon and wish him success in his future endeavours.
