Ymunwch â’r Athro Mary-Ann Constantine o’r Ganolfan Uwchefrydiau Cymreig a Cheltaidd i ddathlu 300 mlynedd ers geni’r naturiaethwr a’r awdur teithio o Gymru, Thomas Pennant.

Byddwn yn arddangos amrywiaeth o lyfrau Pennant a ysgrifennwyd am ei deithiau o gwmpas Cymru, Ynys Wyth, Yr Alban, ac Ynysoedd Heledd, yn ogystal â’i lyfr sydd â darluniau hardd ar Sŵoleg Prydain.

Join Professor Mary-Ann Constantine of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Welsh naturalist and travel writer, Thomas Pennant.

We will display a range of Pennant’s books written about his tours of Wales, the Isle of Wight, Scotland, and the Hebrides, as well as his beautifully illustrated book on British Zoology.

Ar ddechrau'r 19eg ganrif, daeth yn bwysig dod o hyd i ffyrdd cymharol rad o argraffu mewn lliw. Roedd darluniau lliw o fudd mawr i lyfrau am hanes naturiol, teithio ac archaeoleg. William Savage (1770-1843) oedd un o'r arloeswyr. Dangosodd ei lawlyfr Practical hints on decorative printing (1815-23) ei dechnegau a'i ddeunyddiau arbrofol diweddaraf. Roedd wedi sylweddoli y gellid adeiladu delweddau darluniadol manwl o liw ar flociau pren ar wahân. Roedd ei ddelwedd o'r cwch ar yr afon yn defnyddio blociau pren mewn deg lliw.

In the early 19th century, it became important to find relatively cheap ways of printing in colour. Books on natural history, travel and archaeology all benefited from colour illustrations. William Savage (1770-1843) was one of the pioneers. His manual Practical hints on decorative printing (1815-23) showed his latest experimental techniques and materials. He had realized that detailed pictorial images could be built up from colour on separate wood blocks. His image of the boat on the river used wood blocks in ten colours.

Wei Wuxian oedd un o ddynion mwyaf eithriadol ei genhedlaeth ar un amser, yn feithrinydd ifanc talentog a chlyfar a feistrolodd grefftau ymladd, gwybodaeth, ac ysbrydolrwydd yn fedrau pwerus. Ond pan wnaeth erchyllterau rhyfel ei arwain i chwilio am rym newydd trwy ddiwylliant demonig, trodd parch y byd at ei sgiliau yn ofn, a dathlwyd ei farwolaeth, pan ddaeth, ledled y wlad.

Blynyddoedd yn ddiweddarach, mae’n deffro yng nghorff dyn ifanc wedi’i dramgwyddo sy’n aberthu ei enaid er mwyn i Wei Wuxian ddial ar ei elynion ar ei ran. Er iddo gael ail fywyd, nid yw Wei Wuxian yn rhydd rhag ei un cyntaf, na’r dirgelion sy’n ymddangos o’i flaen nawr. Ond y tro hwn, fe fydd yn wynebu’r cyfan gyda Lan Wangji, sy’n gyfiawn ac uchel ei barch, wrth ei ochr - meithrinydd grymus arall y bydd ei ymroddiad a’i gyd-atgofion o’u gorffennol yn helpu i daflu goleuni ar y gwirionedd tywyll sy’n eu hamgylchynu.

Roedd John White, prif lawfeddyg alldaith y Fflyd Gyntaf i sefydlu anheddiad carcharorion ym Mae Botany, hefyd yn gryn naturiaethwr amatur. Yn ei Journal of a voyage to New South Wales (1790) rhoddwyd llawer o’r disgrifiadau cyntaf o rywogaethau Awstralia yng ngwyddoniaeth orllewinol. Soniodd ei gofnod ar 15 Ebrill 1788 am yr hyn a alwai yn barot bola glas, (neu loricît yr enfys), 'a very common species in various parts of New Holland, and in great plenty both at Botany Bay and Port Jackson.'

John White, chief surgeon of the First Fleet expedition to establish a convict settlement in Botany Bay, was also a keen amateur naturalist. His Journal of a voyage to New South Wales (1790) contained many of western science’s earliest descriptions of Australian species. His entry for 15 April 1788 mentioned what he called a blue bellied parrot, (or rainbow lorikeet), ‘a very common species in various parts of New Holland, and in great plenty both at Botany Bay and Port Jackson.‘
