Following recent heavy rain at our Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve, we have had to close part of the Thrust trail due to damage to the path surface. Reserve staff are working hard to fix our paths, however, there remains a large section which will take longer for us to repair. The reserve remains open, however, there is a short diversion around the closed section of path to reach the Moine thrust and the top of the Crag via the Quarry Trail. For your safety, we ask that all visitors please observe the path closed signs and follow the short diversion. Thank you for your patience, and please get in touch with the Reserve if you have any access queries.

Wintery view from Knockan at Sunset. Please note we are closing the NNR to all visitors from Monday 25th Jan to complete the water mains work. We hope to have this finished in well under 2 weeks. Apologies for any inconvenience this might cause.

27/11/2020

Please note that Knockan Crag NNR will be CLOSED from 4pm Sunday 29th Nov. We are upgrading to mains water which will help us continue to keep our toilets open all year. We hope to be open again by 18th December. We apologise to our visitors if this causes any inconvenience.

Current advice from the Scottish Government

We know that people want to make the most of the beautiful country that we live in, however current advice is travel for exercise and leisure should remain within your local area.

You can travel a short distance for outdoor recreation, but stay local – roughly 5 miles is a sensible guide – and where possible get there by foot or bike.

Visiting the reserve:

• If it looks busy when you arrive please try somewhere else.
• The toilets and visitor centre are closed.
• The car park can be accessed, but please respect the guidance and do not travel more than 5 miles to visit.
• The paths on the reserve are narrow and in places, it will be difficult to keep a 2-metre distance.
• Please give other people space and if they need to pass step to the side and wait.
• Keep your dog under proper control. Don’t let it approach people, livestock or wildlife.
• Please take your litter and dog waste home and dispose of it responsibly.
• Be extra careful when it is warm and dry while you are out and about – do not start fires.

You may see staff out and about undertaking their duties, they are required to maintain their physical distance from you, please respect that. They will do their best to help but the safety of staff and visitors must come first.

Take extra care to follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code when you are out and about - https://www.outdooraccess-scotland.scot/.
