I had the idea for the first Reclaim the Night walk in Tunbridge Wells when walking across the Commons. When Lauren and I planned it, our fierce love of the Commons was at the heart of it. We didn’t feel safe because of the perpetrator of an attack on a woman, but we didn’t want to leave it at that and stay away, we wanted to proclaim loud and clear our right to walk from our village to town. The very lovely Ranger and Manager of the Commons could have been disconcerted by our “shouldn’t have to walk in fear on the commons” but instead they reached out to us and took us on a walk to show us the things they had done to improve sight lines and visibility and talk about whether there was more that can be done. We will always be grateful for their support, and we support the Commons right back when we say we hope they will belong to the community. We hope this opportunity will not be lost to secure the future of our always beloved Commons.
If you want to help there are 3 things you can do:
1. Join as a member at friendsofthecommons.uk
2. Pledge - big or small but as big as you can afford. They need to fundraise to stand a chance and this need is urgent!
3. Learn more and share share share

Let’s secure the future of the Commons together

The mind truly boggles. THIS is a harrowing example of how *some* men are using technology, such as smart glasses, to exert power and control over women 😔🚨👓

This BBC News report is horrifying and we couldn’t not respond to it. Sadly, with technological advances come the individuals who actively look for ways to use these devices to exploit women and girls and take away our autonomy. It’s terrifying and creates yet another reason for women to feel concerned about going out in public and walking on our streets, a very basic activity that we have every right to do without fear of being intimidated, attacked or FILMED without our consent.

THIS IS VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS. So is sending explicit photos of your ex around to your mates, or not taking no for an answer when she says she doesn’t want your number, or intimidating her just for fun on the night bus. Women do not owe you anything. STOP. Just stop.

LAST day to see brilliant exhibition , highlighting the UN’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence 🙌

These women have done so much to advocate for safer streets locally, from supporting the Protection from Sex-based Harassment in Public bill to commissioning vital reports and research into how safe women and girls feel on our streets, and we couldn’t be prouder to work with them year after year.

WHAT a night 💫🌙🚶🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Where to begin? Last night was the fourth annual Reclaim the Night walk and undoubtedly our biggest and best yet. More than 100 of you (?!?!) joined us to walk for our safety and freedom on our streets on a VERY chilly November night: you created your own placards, brought friends (including the furry kind) and showed up for this community and for women and girls everywhere. We couldn’t be more grateful for your phenomenal support ❤️

Our message remains the same as the years fly by: we will not stop until EVERYONE feels that they can be a part of this conversation. Violence against women and girls is the most pervasive and dangerous issue in our society, and it starts at home, on the school playground, in the casual misogyny that we brush off or choose to ignore. Now more than ever, we must come together. 🫶🏼

Our heartfelt thank yous go to the local people and organisations who consistently show up and give their time to our cause every single year, especially , Kent Police, , , and councillors. Thank you to for hosting us, for taking these wonderful photos, AND for capturing the evening for a BBC South East piece that will be covered across radio, TV and online 📺

We will be back, same time, same place, in 2026 🙌

Love, Lauren & Jayne 💖

Be a part of it all 📣🚶🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️🌙

We know it’s cold and dark (almost) all of the time now, but that’s precisely why we all need to leave our homes this coming Tuesday 25th November and WALK for our freedom ❤️

Everyone deserves the fundamental right to be able to walk freely on our streets without fear of intimidation, harassment and attack, but right now that simply isn’t the case.

On the UN’s Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, Tuesday 25th November, we will walk. We will walk for every woman who has experienced violence or harassment on our streets. We will walk for every woman who never made it home.

WHEN? Tuesday 25th November, 7:30pm

WHERE? Meet at Rusthall High Street OR St John’s Church on St John’s Road in Tunbridge Wells. Both groups will walk to The Pantiles, where there will be drinks, nibbles and speeches at The Old Auction House from 8:15pm

GOOD TO KNOW: Dress warmly, come along on your own or bring a friend or two (furry friends also welcome!) and please note there will be other participants to walk back to cars with - just let us know! 🙌

MAKE YOUR OWN PLACARDS 💡✍️🎨

If you’re joining us on Tuesday 25th November for our fourth annual Reclaim the Night walk, we encourage you to make some colourful placards to bring along with you!

We will have extra placards to pass around on the day, but if you fancy getting creative, now’s your chance 🥰

A reminder of the details:

Kent’s first and only Reclaim the Night walk is BACK, founded by and in 2022 to campaign for our freedom to walk safely on our streets without threat of intimidation, harassment, violence and attack.

Hi, it’s been a while! If you don’t know us, we are Jayne and Lauren from Reclaim the Night Tunbridge Wells. Since 2022 we have organised a walk on 25th November each year because it’s the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls, and we want to proclaim our right to walk where we like when we like and feel safe. Recently it’s been frustrating to see misinformation about the causes of male violence against women and girls being spread by people in positions of power and so we want to be really clear that we will always stand against hate, division and prejudice. If you would like to join a women-led, positive and inclusive community event follow us here for more details. If you would like accurate information about Male Violence Against Women and Girls follow

Lots of love
Jayne and Lauren

Have you heard of the charity Strut Safe?

They are volunteers who will chat to you on the phone while you walk home alone at night.

One day we will live in a world where we don’t have to take measures like this to protect ourselves or calm our fears - but until that day this sounds like a great initiative and worth a save in your phone.
