🤝 Community-focused initiatives The Wheal Jane Group consists of five interrelated businesses; Wheal Jane Ltd, Carnon Contracting, Wheal Jane Laboratory, Wheal Jane Consultancy and the South Crofty Collection. Ea

ch of our businesses can work independently or in any combination to provide a one stop shop consultancy and contracting service covering land, property and construction. Our businesses have operated for 25 years and each has become a leading and respected operator in its specialist field. Our client base includes private individuals, companies of all sizes and public sector organizations. We operate in Cornwall, Devon, throughout the South West and in many parts of the world. Our extensive experience, expertise and knowledge covers a wide range of civil engineering, environmental and mining related disciplines, and we welcome the opportunity to work on projects large or small. Our contracting company has acquired a reputation for taking on the more complex and bespoke contracts and delivering them successfully, bringing into play specialist skills acquired during past operations in Cornish mines when required. All our businesses offer a very client-orientated personal service. Wheal Jane was worked for tin, copper, silver, zinc and arsenic from the 18th century. Mineral extraction ended in 1992, following the collapse of tin prices. A vast subterranean complex of hundreds of years of workings was abandoned, but the mill, laboratories, equipment and above all the people kept Jane alive. Today, Wheal Jane is home to a host of mining and minerals companies, environmental consultants and mining related manufacturing. The knowledge and expertise that placed Cornwall at the forefront of industrial engineering lives on, the continuity with centuries of activity remains unbroken. Over 100 people work full time at the site, building and constructing mining equipment, analysing ore samples from all over the world, designing and implementing solutions to the environmental legacy of mining; and even manufacturing items from Cornish tin. www.wheal-jane.co.uk

Rogue waste operators continue to undermine the waste industry by accepting loads without proper checks or analysis.

This “no questions asked” approach may appear convenient, but it exposes everyone in the supply chain to significant legal and environmental risk.

At Wheal Jane Waste and Recycling, loads are refused where adequate analysis is not provided or where historical land use indicates a heightened risk of contamination. This stance is deliberate, lawful, and unavoidable. This is not obstruction—it is compliance.

Under waste regulations, responsibility sits firmly with the producer of the waste. It is their legal duty to ensure the waste is correctly classified, tested where required, and delivered to a suitably permitted facility. Responsibility does not disappear because another operator is willing to “take it anyway.”

When waste is rejected, it is a signal that due diligence has not been met. Operators who ignore these obligations may appear accommodating, but they expose everyone involved — producers, carriers, and sites — to enforcement action, environmental damage, and long-term reputational harm.

Recycled aggregates, sustainability and a lesson Cornwall already learned

Recycled aggregates are increasingly promoted as a sustainable solution in construction. Recycling matters, and lower-carbon materials are essential. However, in Cornwall, geology cannot be treated as neutral.

Even where recycled aggregates are washed, the underlying risk may remain unchanged. Washing can remove surface fines and loose contaminants, but it does not remove sulphide minerals contained within the aggregate itself. In a sulphide-rich metalliferous mining district, those minerals can remain dormant for years before oxidation leads to expansion, cracking and long-term concrete deterioration.

Cornwall’s mundic crisis demonstrated the consequences of underestimating aggregate geology. Thousands of properties were affected, not because standards were ignored, but because long-term mineral behaviour was not fully understood.

As recycled aggregates are increasingly considered for cement and concrete products, this raises an important question:
are we fully accounting for Cornwall’s unique geological context, or risk repeating past mistakes under the banner of sustainability?

Which is precisely why responsible suppliers of recycled aggregates must be selective about end use.

At Wheal Jane Waste and Recycling, recycled aggregates are supplied into applications where their performance characteristics are appropriate and well understood and deliberately kept out of structural concrete products, where even low-level sulphide contamination could pose long-term durability risks.

At Wheal Jane, we are committed to providing our customers with the highest standards of products and services. For some time, however, one vital element has been missing from our operations — our own dedicated haulage service.

The importance of responsible recycling and aggregate recovery

When your skips are collected or your waste leaves a construction site, do you know where it’s actually going?

A recent BBC investigation has raised serious questions about what really happens to waste once it’s out of sight — revealing that not all materials are handled, processed, or recycled as responsibly as many assume.
Read More Here - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c4gv77818myo

🚨The tricky part? Some waste companies look legit but aren’t.

Uniforms, slick websites, branded trucks — none of that guarantees compliance.
Here’s what can go wrong:
❌ Unlicensed or wrongly licensed carriers
❌ Mixed collections instead of proper recycling
❌ Missing or fake waste transfer notes
❌ Accepting waste which others have rejected
❌ Illegal dumping (“fly-tipping”)
❌ False claims about where your waste ends up

These red flags could leave you liable — even if you hired them in good faith.

đź—Ł Ask questions. Demand proof.

Before you choose a waste partner, ask:

-Can you show me where my waste goes?

-Is it being processed at a permitted facility?

-What percentage of materials are genuinely recycled or reused?

If a company can’t answer those questions clearly, it’s time to reconsider who you trust with your waste.

🧱 Building a sustainable future, one load at a time

At Wheal Jane Waste & Recycling, we believe every business should be able to trace its waste, from source to recovery. Transparency and accountability aren’t just good practice — they’re essential for protecting our environment, our communities, and the reputation of the construction industry.

Let’s work together to make responsible recycling the standard, not the exception.
