ISightCornwall

ISightCornwall Inspiring life without limitations for people with sight loss.

We are the first centre of resource for all in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly who are affected by sight loss, whatever their age, circumstance or condition. We care passionately about helping anyone living with a visual impairment and have done ever since our foundation in 1856when the charity first supported Cornish miners. Today we aim to support everyone in Cornwall with sight loss of all age

s, to lead active and independent lives. We understand the complexities and life-changing nature of sight loss and the range of essential equipment available, not forgetting that sometimes even the smallest things can make a world a difference.

Some great news from the Accessibility Advisory Group at Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust. After one of our followers brought it to our attention that the steps near the A&E department at Treliske had the wrong tactile paving on them, making them dangerous for blind and partially sighted people, the Estates team have replaced all the paving around these steps. There is now corduroy paving at the top and bottom of the steps indicating to proceed with caution and there is blister paving at the zebra crossing by the dropped kerb. Thank you to the team for prioritising this.

This Sunday (10 May) Pigshill and Clarrick woods in Millbrook are offering guided walks to celebrate the new features they've added to make the woods more accessible to blind and partially sighted people.

After seeking advice from iSightCornwall, there are now Navilens codes at signposts and benches throughout the woods which give an audio description of the surroundings or verbal directions for navigation. They have also installed more benches as well as bark walkways and boardwalks for the trickier pathways. Bench ends and unexpected steps are highlighted in yellow or white paint.

The team would love to welcome anyone with a visual impairment or anyone who is not comfortable navigating the woods themselves. There will be a reception with food and info from 11am till 1pm, then guided walks for all abilities. Please contact Ann with any questions at [email protected].

On Sunday 10th May we have an event to celebrate people with visual impairment having access to our woods. (Thanks to funding from The Primary Club as detailed previously.)
We'd love to welcome anyone with visual impairment or who is not comfortable navigating our woods themselves or anyone who would like to find out more about them.
There will be a reception with food and info from 11am till 1pm, then guided walks for all abilities; see poster for details.
Please contact Ann with any questions (email on poster).

We're absolutely thrilled that our film 'Because I Cannot See' was awarded 'highly commended' at the Brand Film Awards 2026 ceremony last night in the category of Best Use of a Small Budget.

It means so much to us that the work that went into creating this film with DCA PR has been recognised at a national level against some impressive competition. It's a credit to all the team involved, but especially our wonderful clients who shared their personal stories with us so openly. This film wouldn't exist without them.

You can watch the film on our website or visit www.youtube.com/

Tonight's the night we find out how our film 'Because I Cannot See' created by the wonderful team at DCA PR does at the Brand Film Awards, but in the meantime we've made another shortlist!

The film is shortlisted in the 'Best Use of Content' category in the Chartered Institute of Public Relations' Excellence Awards 2026. DCA are up against some big names in these awards so we look forward to finding out how they do on 1 July.

Good luck to the team tonight!

Wow! We are absolutely thrilled to announce that we have received a second award shortlisting for our client ISightCornwall's commissioned film 'Because I Cannot See', this time at the Chartered Institute of Public Relations's Excellence Awards 2026.

DCA are up against big international players like Santander and BAE Systems in the 'Best Use of Content' category and the winner will be announced on the 1st July.

This exciting news comes as we look forward to finding out tomorrow night whether we'll take home a win for our previous shortlisting in the Brand Film Awards.

Our assistive technology team are at Village Exeter today. They've been particularly impressed with a device called the McGonagle Reader Audio Voting System which allows blind and partially sighted people to vote independently with confidence. It uses audio, which can be played through headphones, to announce the name of each candidate on the ballot paper and has a little notch next to each name which can be lifted up to mark your vote. Could this be the future for election days?

What a lovely video from Truro Together to showcase the Truro Civic Awards 2026. Our very own volunteer, Chris Kemp, gets a special mention and shares his experience of volunteering for iSightCornwall.

Chris even manages to put out a request for new volunteers to come forward which shows he's never really off duty! Thank Chris!

We're very grateful to the Hospital Saturday Fund for their generous grant of £4,000 which was presented to our chief executive Carole Theobald at a special Charity Reception in Plymouth last week.

The grant will help us deliver our vital services to blind and partially sighted people living in Cornwall and help us expand our early, community based support.

Thank you for recognising the work that we do and for your generous support.

We're bursting with pride that two of our volunteers, Jenny Salmon and Chris Kemp, received Civic Awards for dedication and service to the City of Truro at a ceremony last Friday evening.

Jenny began volunteering for iSightCornwall in 2002 and has contributed in many roles including driver, fundraiser, walking buddy and club organiser where her commitment has been vital to the success of the Par Dance Club. She's done all of this alongside supporting the Cornwall Talking Newspaper where she's been volunteering for 43 years!

Chris has recently celebrated 10 years of volunteering for iSightCornwall where he too has played a vital role in the success of our clubs including BUGS Shooting and BLIS Singers. Chris is also a volunteer driver and even stepped up to help out in our assistive technology service for a short while.

Both Jenny and Chris have gone above and beyond to help make a lasting difference in the community. Congratulations to you both!
