One of the biggest myths about fostering is that there's a "type" of person who can do it.

In reality, our foster carers come from a wide range of backgrounds, ages, professions and family situations.

What they have in common is a desire to help children reach their potential.

If you've ever wondered whether fostering could be for you, we'd love to hear from you.

πŸ’· One of the questions we get asked most is: "How do fostering allowances work?"

When you foster with Wiltshire Council, you'll receive weekly payments to help cover the costs of caring for a child or young person, alongside an allowance that recognises your skills, time and commitment.

The financial support means you can focus on what matters most: providing stability, care and encouragement to a child who needs it.

You'll also receive:
βœ… Ongoing training
βœ… Outside of working hours support
βœ… A dedicated fostering team
βœ… Opportunities to develop your skills

Fostering is about making a difference, but it's important to know you'll be supported financially as well as professionally.

πŸ’» Want to learn more about fostering from the comfort of your own home?

Join one of the Fostering South West online information sessions on Wednesday 9 September.

πŸ• 1pm to 2pm
πŸ•– 7pm to 8:30pm

These friendly, informal sessions are a great opportunity to learn about:
βœ… The different types of fostering
βœ… The support, training and allowances available
βœ… The assessment process
βœ… What fostering is really like

No pressure. No obligation. Just honest information and answers to your questions.

What does a typical day look like when fostering a child with additional needs?

For foster carer Cheralyn, it's often an early start, balancing medication, personal care, school runs, appointments and much more.

It's a role that demands patience, resilience and commitment. But for the children who need it, having the right foster carer can change everything.

We're looking for more people to foster children and young people with additional needs in Wiltshire. You'll receive specialist training, financial support and guidance every step of the way.

"What makes a good foster carer?"

People often ask us what qualifications they need to foster.

The truth is, the qualities that matter most can't be found on a CV.
πŸ’› Patience

πŸ’› A sense of humour
πŸ’› A willingness to learn
πŸ’› Time to care
